Downloaded items won't show in TRS 2004?

Lurking around since 2004
Hi!
I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem I am experiencing in TRS2004. After downloading items from the DLS, they refuse to show in-game. This has only recently started happening and I have used lots of custom content before without incident, but now they just don't appear. I have searched for missing KUIDs, and both TO and Content Manager can see the items, but when I start the game, they don't appear in any menus at all. I have recently started downloading things in .cdp format as my download helper has started playing up. I'd be really grateful if someone could point me in the right direction, as it's driving me mad.

You are downloading TRS 2004 format content = content form newer version of trainz will cause problem and not show up.

The other issue is you may have had content on you system that used to work in 2004 but the creator has updated it to a newer format which then can break it for 2004. This may happen if you download content updates.

One tip its best to ask 2004 question in the 2004 area of the forums that where the 2004 experts hang out.

Go into TrainzObjectz.

Click on the Menu button (lower right).

Select: Delete ‘Dispatcher.chump’ (about a third of the way down the list).

After you have deleted that file the new assets should appear in Surveyor the next time you load Trainz.

You will probably notice that Trainz takes longer than normal to load after the dispatcher.chump file has been deleted. That's because it rebuilds the file.

Glad it's fixed, but executing a cdp from the desktop into TRS04 or downloading DLS content via the cart should automatically kill the chump, I wonder why it didn't. (muse)win7 issue?

I used to have a batch file on the desktop to kill the chump when 04 was my favorite version, very handy little file it was too! I anyone wants the exact wording just ask....

@theothertwin

Glad it worked.

There are other ways of doing it if you don’t have TrainzObjectz

The first is by finding and deleting the relevant file using the Windows file pathway.

The second method is to delete an asset in Content Manager. It makes obvious sense to choose one which you don’t want to keep, but I’ve managed to find an asset which doesn’t actually delete. However, this method may require two or three goes before the newly downloaded assets appear in Trainz. TO is easier!

@Dermmy

Andy,

I don’t pretend to know too much about the how’s and why’s of this problem but I reckon it must be linked to the Windows/Administrator issues. I use Vista, didn't install Trainz as Administrator, and never load Trainz as Administrator.

It all seems to work though!

There are other ways of doing it if you don’t have TrainzObjectz......

I can't remember whose idea this was originally, but it was a common lurk back when 04 was the only version worth having:

copy and paste the following into a notepad text document

Code:
DEL "C:\Program Files\Auran\TRS2004\CACHE\world_cache_Dispatcher.chump"

Save to the desktop as a .bat file (chump.bat) Make sure Windows doesn't stick an unwanted .txt on the end!

Just click the resultant icon to delete the chump any time it's necessary. The address assumes a standard install, if necessary edit to suit. I make no warranty on how this will work with later over-protective versions of Windows, but if you have stuck with a version that lets YOU run things it's fine....

I used it so often the icon faded to almost nothing. Honest.....

Thanks Andy.

That looks a promising idea. A desktop icon would simplify the process enormously and save having to load TO or CM every time.

I’m a bit hesitant to try this out until checking out a few things. I have an uncanny knack of making things worse whenever I delve into the inner workings and make changes.

For those of us who didn’t install or run the game as administrator there is the problem of the hidden files in the Virtual Store.

Here’s an image of the two areas where my .chump files are located. As you can see the world_cache_Dispatcher.chump file is in the VirtualStore pathway (marked A), but not in the regular Program Files (B).

This raises a few questions (not necessarily for Andy, but to anyone who might know the answer/s please).

1. Could a world_cache_Dispatcher.chump file ever appear in B?

2. If yes, do I create separate DEL references to the two files with a desktop icon for each and run them separately, or could a single .bat file be created to activate both at the same time?

And whilst we’re here:

3. Is it OK to delete all of the other .chump files which appear in the lists?

4. If “yes”, what is the advantage of doing that?

Cheers
Casper
(Still learning!)

Looks like things have changed since I stopped using 04 regularly, and I assume the changes are to cope with those over-protective Widows versions!

The chump files are the compressed files from which 04 loads data into the running program. The ja chumps should in theory never change since they are the built-in content. The world\custom directory and everything under it gets chumped every time Trainz starts so no point deleting it either, the program does that every start. The only chump which is only rebuilt periodically is the world\dispatcher tree to allow the program to access newly installed DLS etc data. Any missing chump file should be rebuilt by the program at start-up. And I will qualify all that by saying I haven't been following 04 changes over the last few years....
