double stacks

Hi Folks:

I have to modify a bridge to make it tall enough inside for double stacks. How tall are they from the rails?

Thanks,

Ben

I am not exactly sure, but 21' seems to stick in my mind, for some reason.

The Alleghenny bore in Gallitzin/Tunnelhill (originally single tracked) was crown mined to permit double stack clearance, and I think they lowered the trackbed in the bore also. The Gallitzin bore was closed and sealed off with cinderblocks. The Cassandra RR Overlook Park (old Iron Bridge) was threatened to be removed in the high/wide clearance program, but it was deemed structuraly sound, and spared for now.

Double Stack Container Train Heights (As of 2011 listed by CSX Transportation)

Double Stack 1: 18 feet and 2 inches (5.54 meters)
Double Stack 2: 19 feet and 2 inches (5.84 meters)
Double Stack 3: 20 feet and 2 inches (6.15 meters)

Double Stack 3 is the most flexible form currently available in the North American loading gauge. To modify your bridge, it all depends on what level of container height you're aiming for.

I don't know what kind the gent intends to use so to be on the safe side I'll make the clearence sufficient for the tallest.

Thanks guys,

Ben
