Disaster

I am almost in tears. This afternoon, while working on a route that I've been working on for a few months now, my computer spontaneously reset while the route was saving. Now when I try to load it up, I get an error message saying I had no route selected. Trying to load it up in CMP gives the error 'cannot read config file'. Im using trs2006. Pleas tell me someone knows a way to recover my route. I've been working on it for so long!

Cheers,
Jesse

You may try this .Go to your main trainz folder (C:\Program Files\Auran\TRS2006) delete file assets.tdx, then go to cache ,delete assets.bku.(if it's there) then restart trainz This will force cmp to rebuild databace. You may have to wait a few mins. If you do get it back, dont forget to make backups of your local folder.

Thanks for the suggestion, I tried that, and now things seem worse.
I deleted 'assets.tdx' ( the .bku wasnt there), then restarted trainz, now the route isnt even in the list, and the route asset dosent appear in CMP either, but some of the sessions for it are still there.

Any suggestoins?

Thanks,
Jesse

It's what i did when it happend to me. Have you lost any downloads ? if not it should be there somewhere . Try restarting your computer .You could also try a system restore.

No I havnt lost any downloads, the only thing thats dissapeared is the route itself, In CMP, I can still see the 'sessions' for the route, but not the route itself.

Where are custom routes actually stored in the TRS2006 folder? If i could find it I suppose I might be able to make a new config file etc for it. I just hope theres a way to retrieve it!

Cheers,
Jesse

I know where you're coming from, this losing a route thing. Unfortunately from TRS2006 onwards it would be virtually impossible to find anything manually as a different file management system is used by CMP. As Paul said, a system restore would be your best chance at this point. From then on, it would be wise if you utilized the 'auto-save' feature of Trainz at intervals of your choice, and export a CDP of it after every significant milestone.

Nicholas.

Ok I've tried a system restore, still no luck.

The strange thing is my computer reset just after the surveyor menu poped up after i exited/saved the route. The data must still be there somewher.........hopefully.

Cheers,
Jesse

This is going to sound funny but I have had routes just gone like that, only for them months later just come back --- search the fourms it might have been a problem someone else had before and found a fix.

All assets are stored in (apparently) randomly named folders in TRS2006/local. the only way to tell what's what is the time that the folder was last updated. If you can identify the folder, copy it to the desktop, and then import it in CMP. If the config file is corrupt you may have to fix it manually - post here for help if you get that far.

Using system restore with Trainz can be useful, but it can also be hazardous. System restore isn't supposed to affect data, but with Trainz it does, as Trainz's data is stored with the program files.

Hope this helps...

Paul

p.s. goes without saying - next time back-up. I lost months worth once - now I save to a new named file once every session, and back up a CDP to my other computer (and storegate) every few weeks.

Ok, thanks paulzmay, so i had a look in the local folder, there was only one folder that has been modified today, so im assuming thats the one. Unfortunately, theres absolutely nothing in it :eek:. So I undid the system restore. Now it has several files in it (reliefe). it contains: config.chump, mapfile.bmk, mapfile.gnd, mapfile.obs, mapfile.trk
But no config.txt, which i assume is why it doesnt comeup in CMP,
sooo....does any one know how to make a config from scratch/is there anything else that should be there?

Thanks,
Jesse,

PS Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I appreciate it VERY much!!

A typical route's config file looks like this:

?
region <kuid:-2:1010>
kuid <kuid:-2:1012>
kind "map"
username "Coal County secure"
workingscale 0
workingunits 0
water <kuid:-1:6352>
description
trainz-build 2.9

world-origin
{
latitude 38,53.4,1
longitude 77,1.1998,-1
altitude 0
}

string-table
{

After string table is a list of every single object you've placed in your route. And a kuid table which is basically the same as the string table but only for DLS' use in finding dependencies. Rewriting the config file from scratch would be extremely difficult unless you only have terrain and few objects.

Cheerio,
Nicholas.

Hmm, none of the things in the local folder have any readable text in their config files, they all seem to be of the .chump format, whatever that is. Also, its still not appearing in CMP, the folder plus all of the files i mentioned are in the local folder, and its still not appearing in CMP, even after an asset-list 're-build'.

Cheers,
Jesse

config.chump is the machine readable version of config.txt. If you use the import content option in the CMP menu on this folder it should come back in CMP (if it's not totally corrupt). From there you should be able to either try to open it in Trainz, or 'open in explorer' so you can check that the config file is all there...

Paul

Ok its now looking quite grim. when i try to import it, CMP tells me "content imported: <NULL>" so it would seem that the config file is corrupt.

Cheers,
Jesse

Does it appear in the CMP lists at all? If so, it may only be missing some data in the config file. If nothing has imported, then it might be worth trying to hand write a config file, and replace the config.chump file in the folder you are importing from. Try using the following:

region <kuid:-2:1010>
kuid <kuid:XXXXX:1012>
kind "map"
username "yourroute"
workingscale 0
workingunits 0
water <kuid:-1:6352>
description
trainz-build 2.6

world-origin
{
latitude 38,53.4,1
longitude 77,1.1998,-1
altitude 0
}

where XXXXX is your kuid number.

I'm not sure, but I think that the kuid table can be rebuilt by trainz - the string table may be the same. It's a long shot, but it's worth a go...

Paul

Yes. Leave out the world origin section as well. Without this, even if you have placed one, the values will be reset. Not sure what would happen if you didn't have one but defined the world origin values though.

Cheerio,
Nicholas.

No, unfortunately, it doesnt even appear in CMP at all. But a new folder is generated in the local directory with the same contents, every time i try to import it. And a new asset appears in the list under the category 'misc.' and with the name 'unnamed' but i cant open it to edit in explorer, CMP just spits the dummy.
