For my route, I need something called a DEM. I need to know where to find this software and how to use it, if there is a manual or tutorial. And I need to know if it coats anything. Free software would be the best. Does anybody have info on this software?

There is a program called TransDEM that can be used to build routes from DEM data. There is an addon, TransDEM Trainz Edition, that converts DEM files directly to Trainz route maps. It's a quite useful payware. Read about it here: http://www.rolandziegler.de/StreckeUndLandschaft/startseiteTransDEMEngl.htm

DEM data for the U.S. can be obtained from various sources, USGS for instance (may cost money). There are also free DEM data sources - just google on "US DEM sources".

There are a couple of programs that can be used to create DEMS. The first is a program called HOG which is free. But a better one is Transdem. This is not a free program but is well worth every penny spent onit. It comes with good tutorials and a lot of personal support from the author.

Blake,

If you haven't already, you might want to seach on the authors fishlipsatwork and smooz. They both posted a lot of blank terrain maps created with HOG and might have done one for the area you need.

TransDEM is a complete program suite for generating DEM models, which includes a module for generating DEM terrain directly into Trainz. Actual US DEM data, for any state in the US can be downloaded for free from the USGS seamless server. The program is accurate, easy to use, and a most powerfull tool for any Trainz route creator. However, be warned.........there is a steep learning curve to grapple with. The program includes tools for overlaying old and new USGS topo maps as well as Google Earth images directly onto generated DEM's.
Well worth the $32!
