Does anyone know what these are for? They are both marked research. I caught them crossing county road 308 just west of Bellevue.

Track geometry vehicles. Checks track for cracks,level, ballast erosion etc. I have video of this set up when they went through Hickory, NC some years back. Good catch by the way.

Why does it simply say research? In my country we write exactly what that piece of equipment is. For example "Track measurement car", "Automatics, communications and [..] car", etc.

Thanks for clearing that up for me I had to chase that one for a couple of miles to get those pics.

If I'm not mistaken, aren't there two sets of those? I seem to recall seeing photos of one where the windows on the slug's cab were plated over.
