Did you try to convert your old routes to TS12?

Hi all,

Just bought TS12 and gave it a try at converting an old route (old is TRS2009 standard) to TS12.

I found out that all my tunnels out of the old standard set where not working. Also platform150 m (an industry platform by blue skye interactactive I believe) was not available in TS12 because of an old build number below v 2.17. This is because of the download station cleanup if I'm right?

Anyway. In the end I gave up because my layout is really really large and fixing is just not fun and a lot of work. The purpose of this thread is to ask you about your conversion experiences. So did it went well, or do you now stay with 2012 and run it 'out of the box'?

The messages regarding the version number, are warnings, and the content will import fine.

You need to ensure that you import your old built-in content if you use that in addition to repairing content that hasn't been updated yet, and by checking for updated content on the DLS.

When bringing in your content, bring the .ja files from TS2009 and register the serial number in TS12. This will add in the missing dependencies so that the missing content will appear.

I just went through this coming from TS2010 into TS12. After sorting out what was really an error

I don't think I would really mess with importing content. I only import content via cdp files. Importing content the other way always causes fatal errors in my routes. I am dealing with transferring content from trainz 2006 to trainz classics. Does this happen in any other versions of trainz?

Hello,

2010 and 2012 are quite similar . . . except . . . 2012 DOES NOT HAVE compatibility mode. That means ALL old "alpha blended trees" will look terrible when brought into 2012.

2010 has an "automatic tree replacement" built in. It only affects routes with some older "built-in" trees that gets replaced with the new horrid looking Speed Trees.

For a few of us, this is devastating. My route is not compatible with 2010 or 2012.

Read this thread about what happened to my route when it was imported into 2010. http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=69845

Just a warning that this could happen to you.

Anyway thnx for the answers. :) I now keep 2009 an TS12 on my HD.
Luckily I got TS12 with a discount voucher. Can't help that its a bit thin on content (where are the geman locos etc?) although the built in routes are beautiful.

How do yo know anything about it? Please don't misinform people about things.

norfolksouthern37,

I'm not trying to misinform. At the end of my thread, I was told by someone who owns 2012 that compatibility mode is not supported. I don't have 2012 but I have 2010 installed. I have not registered 2010 cause its useless to me because I've just been working on my routes.

If 2012 actually does support "compatibility mode" AND it does not have the "automatic tree replacement", then all I have ti do is figure out how to make "obsolete assets" viable again. Once I can do that . . . I can move on to newer versions.

Ed

there is no compatibility mode, but it is also not needed. if you want to use assets with errors stick with the older versions that have compatibility mode. this does not effect any assets that do not have errors, they should work just fine. the alpha blend flat trees will look 'ok' if you have the settings in options right. meaning you must use anti-aliasing so they dont mask out things behind them. they may actually light correctly though, which is something they didnt do before. this might product unwanted results but you cant expect much from a process where a tree image was alpha blended onto a plane and made double-sided.

as for automatic tree replacement, this is done by obsoleting older billboard tree kuids. same thing is done in 2010. i suppose if you really had to have your billboards you could obsolete the new built ins with the old ones. also replacing the tree types you dont like with ones you do is a simple process using the replace tool.

norfolksouthern37,

The "replace asset" tool in 2010 does not work on trees that were replaced . . . at least not in the original position where they were imported from 2009.

If I move one of the replaced tree, then that tree which I moved from its original position can be replaced with another one using the "replace asset" tool. But the rest is not touched. I have several hundred thousand trees that got replaced so its impossible to go and move each on individually.

I can not clone and replace the built-in trees in 2009 because the bug with the "replace asset" tool with regards to the elevation or height never got fixed. 99% of my trees are 50%~90% buried into the ground. So when I use the "replace asset" tool, all the new ones come in at the ground surface height . . . which also destroys the look of my route.

My only option left is to re-plant several hundred thousand trees on my series of routes. I love the concept of "speed trees", but I hate the way they look . . . so far. I have not seen one that is usable on my routes.

I am one of the very few where the new changes has affected my work so negatively. For me, "automatic tree replacement" is a million times worse than having to live with the loss of compatibility mode. Without the "automatic tree replacement" . . . I would have been one of the first to buy 2012.
