DEM Terrain and TS2010

I'm close to loading a large layout (1500 to 2000 boards) w/TransDem generated terrain.
What is considered a practical size to load at one time? Should I break the route into sections and rejoin them in Surveyor? Is there still a problem in TS2010, when joining boards?
Running Win7 64, 6Gb DDR3 RAM, Intell i7 @ 3.99 GHz, GTX 570 GPU....

1500 to 2000 is big, but no way do you need to break that down. TransDem will generate the necessary files and into Trainz it goes all in one lump...

Demmy, thanks for the info on Trans DEM. Any hint of the practical baseboard limits that TS2010 will accept for a TransDEM route in a single gulp? I will also be applying UTM objects w/raster map data to the route.

So long as the gnd file can be opened by Windows you are fine, which for all practical purposes means there is no limit. XP can handle a 2 gig file, Win7 can handle significantly bigger. If your gnd file straight out of TransDem is even a fraction of 2 Gig then you have a route so big you will never complete it anyway!

Look at it this way...

 If your computer can handle the route building done by TransDEM, Trainz Edition, then Trainz can handle the finished route.

By the way, only what is needed for viewing is cached by Trainz. In the cab, is the least amount stored, so the program does run smoother. When you exit the cab, that cache is deleted and Trainz builds the next cache faster than greased lightning.

As you progress through the route, caches are dumped and new content is cached as needed, so it will never matter how big the route is, you can run it.

The regulator for the amount of cache accumulated is the Draw Distance. I run Dermmy's East Kentucky v3 with the sliders pulled all the way to the left because my focus is either Tracking view or Cab view.

Thanks for the insights. guys. I would rather load a complete route DEM into Trainz than deal with adding sections later, as I have read that there's an issue with joining sections in TS2010 that hasn't been resolved.

What might be confusing you if you have been reading previous posts about DEM route creation is that if you create via MicroDem and HOG there is an upper limit to the number of DEM 'Quad' files that can be merged in MicroDem. This is the issue that leads to the need to merge part-routes in Trainz. AFAIK no such problem exists if creating in TransDem.

With either method there is no practical limitation to the size of route that can be imported into Trainz itself except the file size thing mentioned above...

Thanks for clarifying that issue, Dermmy. I feel I can happily start creating my new rr empire, now.
I used TransDEM with TS06 and no issue with it. I feel somewhat confident that I can use it in TS2010 as I plan, with no issues, thanks to your input, guys.

There is a merging issue with TS12 where the program will crash after the merging process. However, an unpopulated route will work fine, which is interesting. This has been confirmed as a bug with N3V, but there is no fix at this time.

I have successfully merged in DEM files, created in TransDem, with each other, then merged the complete, TransDem-created route into my own route. I cannot merge in two complete routes otherwise the program barfs.

So having said this, I find it a bit easier to work with the TD created routes in bits and pieces, particularly where there are sections missing such as crossing over UTM quads.

Right now I'm working on bringing in the complete Maine Eastern Railroad into my route as my "Eastern Maine" division. My Enfield and Eastern will exchange cars with the ME just as PAR does today.

Thanks for input, jcitron. I plan on completing the Boston-Salem route to Rockport, Ma., where the B & M linked up with the Gorton's Fish factory, there.
GFisher ought to know something about that, as he lives there. I plan also to model B & M branch that went to Haverill and Lowell, which you know, were old textile mill centers.
I would love to model the B & M thru Worcester, Springfeild, Hoosack Tunnel, Troy, NY and finally Mechanicsville Yard in Albany. Thats 100 plus miles of route! Do you think Trainz can handle it without reverting to the dreaded 'blue screen'?

*sigh*

That's not a big route - OK, 100 miles IS a big route, but the record is safe!

There is NOTHING about a 100 mile route that would challenge TRS04 let alone later versions. Remember the 2gig thing? My WIP Clovis3 runs near 200 miles and currently scrapes in just a tad under 500Mb for the entire route folder. The gnd file accounts for about 90% of that so when I finally get the entire Clovis sub done from Belen to Clovis the route will still be under 1 gig.

There is nothing in your proposed route which threatens a hiccup let alone a blue screen! Stop worrying and start having fun....
