Detector placement
Well... you can put them anywhere you want to... the detectors I worked with on the Illinois Central RR were about 30 miles apart. When the CN bought us out, we installed new detectors approximately 15 miles apart.
That was on the Fulton district where I worked, and only because we had a grain train derail between detectors. The offending hot wheel showed " warm" when it passed the last detector, but about 20 miles down the track it was hot enough to loose a wheel and derailed about 10 loaded grain cars (at approximately 50MPH). Unfortunately, the conductor of the northbound train sitting in the siding waiting for the southbound grain train to pass was on the ground watching it by.... He was buried in corn. After the dust cleared, the engineer of his train saw his hand sticking up out of the corn and safley pulled him out. I don't think he went back to work after that.
AFAIK, the detectors in Trainz do count axles and give train speed. I haven't used one in about 5 years, and that was with TRS2004. I'll try one
on TS2010 and report back.
Thanks
