Dear Auran, I am not a thief!

I haven't been here in ages.. actually haven't played Trainz in ages. The only version I have is 2006, which I bought and registered. However, I am getting an email today stating:

"It is obvious you have enjoyed Trainz (www.ts2009.com) enough to consider registering online, although it seems the Serial Number you have attempted to register was either from an illegal copy or non-purchased version."

It is obvious that you need to clean up your records. Either that, or this is a tactic to get people's interest in 2009. ie, send them an email to accuse them of using an illegal copy, which will most likely make them come on to the site.

Either way, I don't have 2009, never had it, never attempted to register it. Since the email came from do_not_reply@auran.com, and there's no other address to contact them in this email, I'm tempted to go with the idea that I'm being spammed.

Anyone else getting that?

Every person has the right to defend themselves, so the "do not reply" bit is very odd. You've stated your case clearly, so please wait for a response if any. Hopefully it will be forthcoming by email.

If your haven't changed your password here in a while I would guess someone has it and is passing it around the warez websites along with a copy of TS2009. Some kiddies most likely tried to register it using your username.
Remember Auran's forum was hacked a few years ago and they advised everyone to change their passwords.

Auran would know it was a bad serial only if they had seen it in the "wild" and black listed it.

I suggest changing your password to something strong 8 chars min, upper and lower case, include numerics.

An example would be "ABC12abc" except that one is a simple one.

Using a postcode, not your own, or car registration number with additional letters is reasonable.

I used to have a list of 100 of the most common passwords lying around, one day one of the security guys and myself sat down and did a small attack on internal databases. I think we got into 40% on the first password attempt.

The two most common used to be "password" and "hello".

After you've done that then I suggest contacting helpdesk and see if they can help. It may not have come from Auran and simply be some one testing email addresses to see which ones are valid so they can be sold.

Cheerio John

Just to add to what John said, according to Kevin Mitnick, the most common password for salesmen is "golf". Now if that isn't funny than nothing is.

Hi All

First off, the best thing to do when you get an email such as this is to contact us directly through the helpdesk.

I have spoken with one of the admins, and this is a legit email. It was sent out to all accounts that have a non legitimate serial number registered to them, but no legitimate serial number. The account "realm174" is one of these.

However, as above, the best thing to do is to contact the helpdesk if you have any inquiries regarding this.
