D&RG / Canon City to Salida Colorado

The begining of what is going to be a very looonnnggg build.:udrool:

The route will run from Canon City, Colorado to Salida Colorado. This will be roughly 55 mi. or 88.5 km.

The layout required 1,025 boards. The DEM was created using MicroDem and Hog.
The DEM was merged together in MicroDem and loaded into Trainz as a single DEM and I had no problems with the size.
There was a couple issues, but thanks to many of you on the forum, those issues got resolved.

Many people here have offered there assistance in the creation of this route and I would like to thank you all for that.

Maybe some of you would like to continue off this route and create the other lines in the Royal Gorge route.
If so, most of my info is coming from http://www.ghostdepot.com/rg/index2.htm

I will be posting images as I progress throughout the build.

Thanks again to all that have helped me get this far.

Mini Map image Part-1. Route starting in Canon City, Colorado heading West into the Gorge.

This image is the center of the Royal Gorge.

The Black Line is the location for the Suspention Bridge.

The Blue Line is the location for the Inclined Railway.

The Green and Yellow Line are the location for the Hanging Train Bridge.

This is a shot inside the Royal Gorge of the location where the Hanging Train Bridge is located.
Shot is facing West.

Here is an image from the North side of Canon City looking South/West.

The little blue line on the left is the Arkansas River running down the south bank of the Gorge. This is also where the D&RG main line enters into the Royal Gorge.

I though God created the Elevation itself, not the digital model:confused:

Rail4Pete :D

P.S. DEM= Digital Elevation Model

God created us, to create the Dems data to use in the Hogs program, that he also helped us to create so
that we could create the elevations, or Digital Elevation Model we use within our Trainz layout that he also helped us create.

And god did it in 6 days.
It's gonna take me more than a year. And that's with his help. Considering, I'll only be slowing him down.:hehe:

P.S It is Thought not Though;)

Sure does make life a bit easier.

I think this is a power plant. It look s like coal cars wiating to be unloaded. I may be wrong. I need to get more info on it.

Canon City- the city with the largest number of prisons in the world isnt it?

What time period are you basing your route in? Think it would have been a long time ago when narrow gauge was last in place over this stretch of line...

JRs dark track works pretty well i reckon, also for roads theres the AASHTO system on the DLS and also a hand road here that i use all the time http://uslw.net/index.php/contacts/rolling-stock?view=product&id=99

That is a power plant if i remember right, and is still served by UP.

Hey Scratchy,

I am going with the current time frame since the D&RG still uses this line as a tour line. Also I want to be able to model the Incline Railway that descends 950ft. down into the Gorge at a 45 degree angle below the Suspention Bridge.

This will allow me to model and add the Suspention Bridge even though it is over 1,000 feet above the tracks. All Fun!!!:D

Checked out that road. Thank you verry much for the link. I can realy use this.

Still snooping around for rails. I noticed they have more than one size NG track, or atleast there is more than one size listed in my assets. Didn't know this. So I am going to have to do some homework to make sure I have the correct size track for that area.

Well, Well, Well, Now I think I know why no one has attempted this route. From what I am reading, it is still a bit chopped up using Narrow, Standard and Dual guage tracks. Finding the split is going to be a trick.

I go into Google Earth and use the street view to view tracks at intersections so I can see some of the rail sizes but don't know what they did in the yards.

Thanks,

Merrill

Forgive me if I got you wrong here, but the Royal Gorge route is Standard Gauge ONLY since 1911. (Dual gauge 1888- 1911, NG 1871- 1888)
Good luck with the route! The Royal Gorge is spectacular!

Your right, found that out yesterday.

I thought they still had the dual guage running through the gorge, but no longer, from what I was told.
Good thing too. There is plenty more to choose from in Standard guage and less I will have to build.:)

Thanks,

Merrill
