Correct me if I'm wrong

Ok, so I've been running TRS2006 for a quite a few years now and don't really plan on switching it up right now. The problem is, why would I pay $50 or what ever it is to get access to the dsl for a hand full of dependancies? It would be cheaper and more reasonable to pay for payware (keep in mind tho, I run TRS2006, Jointed Rail's stuff looks amazing) but the sites that are dependable enough to purchase locos don't offer the content that I like to use and the people that offered the content I used disappeared (SPORBUST). I would buy TS2012 or a newer version but I have enough troubles tryin to get 06 to run and I am pretty busy and only get a chance to run Trainz a few times a year and afraid it would be a waste of money and totally discourage me from playin the game at all. Plus, there is so much more content for 06 just because its older. I feel like I'm backed into a corner here lol.
I tried downloading content from other sites only to find out that I have to get on the dsl to get dependancies that are needed to run the loco. So the "freeware" is actually not free. Its actually more expensive to run 06 or 04 than it is to run 09 and newer. But once the newer ones are paid for, there is less content available. This is really starting to bring me down.

Apologies for having to correct you, but Trainz versions up to TS2010 are backwards compatible with most TRS2004/6 content, although you may need to correct some errors (although the DLS Cleanup is progressing to correct assets that are inherently faulty (i.e. faulty on the DLS).

Technically, there's a whole lot more content for TS2010 because old content will work with TS2010; the reverse isn't necessarily true. I mention TS2010 because it has a compatibility mode that forgives many content errors. Also, JR and others are building their products to at least TS2009 and up specs now, and TS2010 SP3 in the case of some of Auran's DLC.

Plus TS2010 can be had for only $30. That's about what a movie and popcorn for two costs, and you'll get a lot more than 2 hours out of it.

Thanks for the input. I have nothing against the newer versions, its just that i'm pretty much computer illiterate and have enough problem keeping 06 running lol. It just seems to me that there is so much less content available for the newer simulators than there is for 06. but if 10 runs the older models, I might look into that cuz 06 is getting very out dated. I guess no matter how I look at it, I'm gonna have to update eventualy. That kinda sucks for me cuz I have a route that I have been biulding for roughly 4 years. :(

Be sure to back up your route in a CDP file - twice if you really want to be safe, and save to another disk or email it to yourself, and maybe make a separate CDP of the dependencies. You don't need four years of work down the drain, and it seems just about every few weeks somebody posts how the route they were working on the last 2-3 years got wiped out by a hard drive crash, or they overwrote something.

You should be able to import everything easily enough but backing up is essential in any computer project, and especially a Trainzy one.

I think I'll do that. Will the route that are built in TRS2006 good in 2009 and up? I mean will they still work in a newer version og Trainz?

It should do, but be prepared to have to fix some faulty assets (if you are stuck, forum members should be able to help)

I run TRS2006 and I am happy with it, and anually purchase a FCT for @ $22 USD, so I can download from the DLS.

I am planning on purchasing TS10, because alot of new assets and updated stuff is not for TRS2006.

My TRS2006 route should work in 09/10/12 versions ... but TS 09,10,12 versions will not work backwardsly in any lower version. ie: TS12 stuff will not work in TS10 ...etc ...

I hoope they work. I thought about tryin to upload it but then then if I ever need it I'll have to buy a ticket to get it back, right?

I like 06 also. I've been watching youtube vids on 2012 and it looks pretty cool too. But... I'll probably have problems getting it started and just set it down and never mess with it again and then I'd have a $50 dust collector lol

I never had TRS2006, so I can't answer what would work, but probably half of the routes I have are apparently 04/06 routes and they run fine, including the payware Marias Pass Plus. There are 30 or so routes included with TS2010, and I believe most all of them at least were originally 04/06. Maglev 2006 is one of my favorites.

Meh, upload it anyway and upload a second copy to hotfile or rapidshare. Then you and others can enjoy it FCT or not.

Please, just be sure to heed my advice above about making backups before installation...well, ALWAYS making regular backups! And email them to yourself or upload somewhere in case some big computer disaster happens!

Only one problem - Trainz 2006 assets cannot be uploaded to the DLS unless they are upgraded to trainz-build 2.7 or later.

But hosting your TRS2006 route on assets on Mediafire, and such, as a CDP, is a way to share them with TS 09/10/12 users.

RGCX is still creating wonderfull stuff in TRS2006, and Mezzaprezzo is using TRS2004 with fabulous screenshots. Sethmcs is stiil using TRS2004 for his Altoona Johnstown USSteel plant route, and it looks great !

"have enough problem keeping 06 running"

Haven't seen a mention of system specs, but if your system is as old as 2006 you may be better off with TS2009 since the required specs are lower than TS2010.

This is excellent advice no matter what program you're installing. Even when big database servers are updated, backups of backups, squared are made just in case the inevitable may happen!

Wyanote,

I have a route that has gone from TRS2004 to TRS2006 then TS2009 to TS2010 up to TS2012. There were a few tweaks here and there with my content, but back then there was no DLS clean-up project in place, so I had to error-free all my own assets. There were over 1,000 items, but remember I've had TRS2004 since early 2004 when it first came out, and have been downloading since I first got the program back then.

Since you are starting out a lot later, you'll have a lot less older stuff to fix, besides much of the earlier content has been updated already and replaced on the DLS.

Just remember that TS2010 will need a much better computer than 2006 does. New graphics card, processor and memory upgrade is essential.
