hope this post is not in the wrong section if it is sorry for that

I need some asistance on this one when copying the local folder to the desk top does it need to be in desk top short cut or do I use the compressed zip folder or can I copy the local to cd or dvd. which one is safest in terms of keeping all the dependencies and files for that perticular piece of rolling stock or engine together if you know what I mean. so when I retreive all the rolling stock and engines I will not have any trouble putting them back into the cmp and into surveyor.

There is no need to copy the local folder anywhere unless you want to backup your data. TRS2006 and above uses a database to keep track of the assets (the trees, locomotives, etc.), and this is all located under the directory where Trainz is installed.

You might want to periodically backup your local folder anyway just to make sure you don't lose anything should there be a dreaded computer crash.
