Content Updates

Is it actually possible to download the 'Content Updates' for Trainz 2012 without buying a 'First Class Ticket'? I've been trying for ages, but the downloads often don't complete. Is there anyone here who's actually done it without paying extra?

Hi pmcoz,

It is possible to do it without a first class ticket, but I do not recommend it due to the fact that there is a daily limit of 100MB, and the speeds are ~5KB/s.

Could be days depending on how much content you have to update, espcially with the 100mb daily limit (which frequently plays up if it is exceeded, and may prevent you downloading content for a few days).

In my personal opinion, if you have a lot of updates, a FCT is essential.

Thanks for the replies. Trainz wanted to do 610 updates as soon as I installed it! I'm afraid I'm just not willing to cough up for updates, so I'll have to make do with the defective default content.

You may be able to do it in batches of about 40-50 a day.

Most users here probably think that FCTs are good value for money (esp. the 1 year one).

If you intend to do Multiplayer, you will need to install the updates.

I'm doing fine downloading and updating lots of content without a FCT. Yes, it does take time at 5 kB/s, but with a house, a garden, two kids, and a full time job, it's really not a problem to find something else to do while the download slowly finishes... :)

If we are just talking updates - not downloading new content - then there are two things to have in mind before considering buying a FCT:
1) The Content Updater can be run in the background while you do other things in Trainz (just Minimize the updater window once downloading has started, then you can go back to the Main Menu and enter Surveyor or whatever; the minimized Content Updater window will be up to the right, you can open it and check progress whenever you like).
2) From what I can see, updating content doesn't use up any of the daily 100 MB quota.

I did have problems with downloads not completing (both updates and new content) before I upgraded my Internet connection to higher bandwidth and also changed ISP. Assets larger than 4-5 MB would typically not go through. Works fine now, so I blame my old Internet connection/ISP.

Thanks for the reply, erafjel. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who has suffered the non-completion bug! I've just changed ISPs (for other reasons) but the problem persists for me. :(

Like you, I'm perfectly happy to be patient, but when a download takes two hours to get to 100%—and then fails to ever complete—it gets a bit demoralising.

This has occasionally happened to me. The file has downloaded but for some reason fails to install. If you look in the TS2010 directory under Userdata/Cache/Internet you will find a number of files including CDP files. These are assets downloaded during your session, they do not have meaningful names but the size and date modified (it is usually the last file) will tell you which file is the one that stalled. There is also a text file called cachefile.txt which lists the most recent files downloaded.
Unfortunately you cannot just drag this file into CM while CM is open instead you need to copy the last file to, for example, the desktop then you can drag or use import cdp to load the file from where you copied it into CM.

Thanks for the info, dnevans8, but I'm afraid I'm just a user. I needed it to work when I clicked 'Update'. CM is WAY over my head. It would be good if Auran could fix this bug so the workaround isn't necessary.

Even with a first class ticket, getting updates on a Mobile internet connection is hard, some don't complete, Can't believe some that keep comming upas updates even though they completed last time.
