Content Manager maintenance

Can someone point me to a thread regarding CM maintenance.
I can now use layers properly due to help provided and today I dug up a thread about steam engine controls that has pointed me in the correct direction regarding blowers.
Out there is a nugget which is the optimum guide to the CM I am sure.
What to do with those items that show up red in Download Helper is a start....
