Confirm correct back-up Procedure?

I wanted to back up all of my Installed content from the Download Station. I selected all of the files from the Installed list, and then selected "Save to CDP". Did I do the correct steps for backup, or was there a better way? My understanding is that if i need to re-load the Data later, I will inturn 'Import from CDP'.

One alternative is to save a copy of the ...\Auran\TS2010\UserData folder. This saves all of your created and downloaded content (local folder plus assets.tdx index), CM3.3 settings, bookmarks, internet settings, etc.

If I copy that User Data File, then everything will just work when i drag the folder back in after a clean install, at a later date?

As our Prime Minister would say during PMs question time (in the Houses of Parliament) - "I would refer you to the reply I gave earlier" :) . Check out this thread, which you started, to which I replied (twice):

Specifically to post #5.

Sorry, I did already read your answer. I was just conflicted between the guy who said I could simply drag the folder back in, and your answer that I needed to Import it?

Can I not just drag the folder back into place?

I haven't tried this method but others claim they drag the UserData folder back to the TS2010 folder then do an extended database repair.

I tested the whole thing out overnight. After re-installing the game, I replaced the 'UserData' folder with my pre-existing copy, and everything seemed to have transposed just fine.

Does anyone know why one would have to run the Extended Database Repair?

I just found this thread right after I responded to your thread about adding 2009 to 2010.

I back up my 2009 and 2006 (they're on separate computers) by clicking and dragging each Auran folder to an external drive. I've also done it by copying each version to two DVDs. In my last DVD copy of TRS2006, the "World" folder took most of one DVD; everything else took part of a second disk. If I make a mess of the installed version, I delete the Auran folder from the C:\ drive, make a new one, and copy everything in that version's disks to the new folder. It's always worked.

I have only performed that procedure with the 'UserData' folder. Is there any reason I should complicate this process by backing up preceding files as well? It seemed that i was fine by just copying the single folder.

Hi LadyWind,

To me whyfly2 seems to be talking about 2009 & 2006, ignore that, the backup procedure in 2010 is different. If as you say you copied your "userdata" folder to a safe place then copied back after a reinstall then that proves it works. The reason for a database repair is usually to speed up loading the Trainz program, i.e. it doesn't have to keep looking all through the database again and again.

I've been backing up my installation by just backing up the whole thing, the entire Auran directory and everything underneath it, onto the D: partition of a spare hard drive I had. Tonight I just built a second computer using that hard drive. It already had TS2010 installed on the C: (Windows) partition. I ran my backup that was on the D: partition, and everything ran great. Put another way, you can just save the entire Auran directory.

Hi LadyWind - What RRSignal means is that if something in the game gets corrupted and you can't fix it then you don't need to re-install and patch again. Copying your backup of the installation is much faster that re-installing.
