Comparing the Baldwin S-12 and DS-4-4-1000

I'm thinking about skinning JR's Baldwin S-12 in a Frisco livery. The problem is the Frisco didn't have any S12's. They had several DS-4-4-1000's.

At first glance there doesn't seem to be much outwardly differences in appearance. Could someone elaborate on the differences between the two a bit? Were most of the changes internally? If so it might make a good reskin.

Baldwins have a lot of differences in just one model number and then the Frisco shop could do a lot of mods, best to look at photos.

Iv'e been studying photos and I can't see any obvious differences between the two models. I was hoping someone could confirm this.

The S-12 replaced the DS-4-4-1000, but externally the S-12 was very similar to its predecessor (Although the early DS-4-4-1000s used the longer VO-1000 body and a 608NA engine).

The thing is, that even within a certain model range, Baldwin had a lot of variety in design between locomotives. It'll bug the rivet-counters, but I believe you could pass off the DS-4-4-1000 as an S-12 (Or even a VO-1000 if you're willing to use your imagination).

Internally, the DS-4-4-1000s were capable of 1000hp whereas the S-12 was capable of 1200hp.

Dricketts, I'd say an S-12 from you-know-where could certainly pass as a Frisco VO-1000/DS-4-4-1000 (I've actually heard them called both names), and I think It's no secret I can be a rivet counter extrodanaire...take that for what you will :hehe:

Great input guys. I just got a pm from therock the creator. He said a reskin kit should be coming. Maybe I should do a Frisco and a MKT version...
