After months of negioations, Union Pacific pulled 9871 (ex D&RGW 5401) off the auction block and donated the unit to the Colorado Railroad Museum. Since we have no where to put it, it will be moved by BNSF to Coors, where it will be stored until time, space, and funding are in place to move it onto the museum property.
Worried that Pee Wee can't handle this 350,000 pound locomotive? Well don't! Its fully Operational! Just add fuel (and maybe an oil change) and it moves under its own power. The wheel base is also just short enough to fit on the turntable! However there is some debate on whether we can push the turntable with the unit on it......Because of its massive weight. It will also hang over by at least 2.5 feet on each end, as its 70 feet long compared to the 65 foot turntable. Unlike our poor GP30 which was stripped down the the bare block, its only missing a few odds and ends, but otherwise will run under its own power. Rumor is that a small standard gauge track will be built along the street so the unit can occasionally be fired up and run back and forth to keep it in good working order.
It is more or less original from 1981, minus some yellow and orange vandalism on the cab (haha). The Lighting package will be backdated once we get it, we already have the marker lights I am told.
......And some wonderful painting assistance from the good state of California......
