Christmas shutdown - contingency plans?

Bump

Bumping this in the hope of getting some actual information from someone at N3V.

No the sky would not fall if the servers crash, but people making assets over the Xmas holidays might like some assurance that they will be able to upload them rather than wait 2 or 3 weeks for the DLS to be re-started.

So, once more, what are the contingency plans to deal with a server crash over the Xmas/New Year break this time? Do you even have a plan?

This thread is starting to remind of the story I read as a kid about the "Sky is falling"..... Anyway it's a mute point, since the Mayan Calendar states the end of the World is coming right before the Christmas Holidays.

Personally I would put more faith on a server crash than the end of the world.

I certainly do not predict a server crash, or prolonged outage of the Forum ... but it would be comforting to be able to converse with other forum members during periodic times when the forum is down for several days. I know how I go through withdrawl when communications are down.

So, again, alternate emergncy Forum links would be helpful, when unexpected outages might occur.

Even the most seasoned Trainzer goes through: "What Is Wrong With my PC Connection Now" ? when communication is down.

How about everyone post their phone number :)

Primary reason these subforums;
http://www.trainsim.com/vbts/forumdisplay.php?113-Auran-Trainz
get little use is because everyone is here. Phil Skene almost single handed kept the Trainz forum going over there for several years, if there was more activity there would be more subforums added. I talked Nels into making a multiplayer subforum before the one here opened, that will probably be closed because it never gets any users at all.

Nels Anderson ran bulletin boards for flightsim games before the internet existed, so his websites rarely have problems because he has many years experience as a webmaster. Result of that is it's hardly ever down, and on the rare occasions it does go down it's never for very long. So for a backup it's a pretty reliable one.

Nels = Tron!! ;) ;)

If its technical help thats needed, my site is virtually always available apart from any minor hiccups due to server issues.

I find the atmosphere on Transim to be very restrictive and authoritarian. The owner of the forum thinks he is a supreme being, in my opinion, and if you dare disagree with him , it is not tolerated. He can keep it. I'd rather read a telephone book than that forum.

When the Trainsim moderators started signing their posts to members with "OR ELSE!", it's clear to see something is not quite right there. Makes one glad to be here, and thanks to everyone who can help out during holiday week.

I have started setting up a forum that all members are welcome to post to. The forum is hosted on a very reliable service, with the site actually co-located in two separate geographic locations for redundancy - down time should be virtually non-existent. The URL is www.kd7eir.com/forum. Later today I will have my SSL certificate in place, and then I plan to add a chat to the forum. Right now I just have one category to get the forum going. Feel free to post suggestions for sub-forums that you would like to see. I will be looking or anyone that is interested in moderating forum. Just send a PM to me with your interest, and I will get back to you ASAP. Registration is very simple. There is a CAPTCHA and you have to respond to an email, but you will not have to wait for me to approve your account.
