Changing signaling in NEC - Philly to Wilmington

Newbie to TS12. Trying to create additional scenarios in the NEC - Philly to Wilmington route. Wondering around in the route a little I find that I've come to a red signal in one of the industrial routes that doesn't respond to changing the junction behind it. Exploring it in Surveyor, I see the message "the line ahead is unsignaled". Is there a way to 'signal' the parts of the route that I want to build new scenarios on? Can someone point me to a tutorial on the principles of signalling in TS12? Thanks.

FYI I used GrahamSea's scripted signals to resignal wridenour's NEC route, although those signals work differently than the basic Trainz signals. They look and work well for the most part, though I have not added an AI traffic.

If a line is not signaled, it is a dead end track, or signals must be added, and a loop back must be installed (invisatrack is OK to use).

Or add a track end signal to the end of the spur.
