CEO of Metro Trains Melbourne says no to armed Gaurds on trains at night

These thugs are getting into trouble for strong arm tactics now, could you imagine three times as many and all with guns, and if you think a lot of them are not thugs try asking the pensioner they threw off the last train of the night, all because her 2 hour ticket had expired by 5 min, oh and the train was 10min late, meaning she had the right to be on that train, not so long ago I was on my way to the zoo and saw no less than six of these 'officers' harass three emo's who were doing nothing wrong, and by harass I mean surrounding them and making snide remarks, and when one woman objected to this treatment she was told to mind her own business or they would put her off the train.
And you would like to see them have guns, give me a break, the ONLY people that should be armed are trained security guards and the police, not some police wanna-be that has had one days training (if that)
If the opposition want more security for the trains, not just the night ones, they should get the police to train proper transit police.
This is just a political stunt in the lead up to the state election later in the year.

Cheers David

While the story may have facts behind it, just remember that Adelaide Now/Daily Telegraph, etc are News Ltd (ie: Murdoch) and quite often can twist the facts.

PS: I wouldn't like transit police in Adelaide carrying guns. They must be the (words not fit for this forum) ones in Australia.
PS-2: Of course I don't mean all of them, but gee, . . .

Is Melbourne really that dangerous? I understand the need for guards who can handle themselves if things get a bit rowdy, or who can be a re-assuring presence for lone women on trains late at night, but firearms?

Yeah, it was the softly softly approach of the last commissioner that did it, she had an overly large portion of the force behind desks in the Melb HQ, even now where I live in Corio (north of Geelong) there was a lady being terrified by a mob of drunken louts that had to wait 2 hours for police presence after ringing 000, the reason, only the desk sergeant on duty and he could not leave the station unattended, and I presume that Geelong or Werribee could not spare any and neither could our fine city of Melb.

It has been stated that you are safer on the streets of New York than on the streets of Melbourne, or even Geelong/Corio (75km Sth of Melb) sad isn't it.

Wouldn't Geelong be Southwest-ish of that hol, um I mean Melbourne, in Mexic, um ur Victoria.

But these days, you're probably right, New York maybe safer.

:o :o :o oi I resemble that remark:o :o :o

/me wanders off into the distance mumbling something about the farther north you go the more the sun effects you, take the banana benders as an example

I assume you meant 'resent', rather than 'resemble'?

But really, is travelling on Melbourne trains really that bad, that armed guards are considered a viable option? To think that yesterday i was thinking Cityrail was bad, having to listen to a couple of people organizing a drug deal.

Remind me next time i'm in Melbourne not to.....

Wait, never mind; i won't ever, for any reason, travel to Melbourne!:p

Matt

Nope, I meant resemble, its called a play on words.

While it is bad, armed thu.. erm security people, not trained by the police, is not the answer, more police presence or more police trained security on all trains at all times of the day (semi-random) is the answer, but that would mean the state government would have to spend money on something else besides that white elephant "MYKI"

Cheers David

:o :o :o Quote from a news article,:o :o :o

"Myki is Melbourne's controversial new $1.35 billion smartcard ticket system, which is running over three years late and $400 million over budget."

I like the new bit, it was started in 05, supposed to be up and running in 07, hmmmm over 3 years late and still not working properly, typical of the Vic government, they all get gov cars to drive, even for private use
