Freight train rams into mail-carrying semi at Addison rail crossing.

A semitruck transporting mail from a west suburban processing facility to local post offices was split in half Thursday morning when it was struck by a freight train at a rail crossing in Addison, according to a Fire Department official.

The crash happened about 4:50 a.m. at the Grace Street crossing between North and Fullerton avenues, according to Chuck Baxa, battalion chief for the Addison Fire Protection District. The semi was northbound on Grace, and the Canadian National Railway train was heading west when it struck the semi's trailer, Baxa said.

Patrick Waldron, a spokesman with CN, said an initial investigation found that warning gates at the crossing were working properly at the time of the crash.
"They were functioning as designed at the time of the incident," Waldron said.
Two people who were on the train were treated at the scene for minor injuries, Baxa said, but the truck driver was not injured. Grace in the vicinity of the crash was temporarily closed.

Chris Weinbrenner, public information officer for the Addison Police Department, said authorities planned to review footage from a camera on the train's engine to determine if any charges will be filed.
Waldron said the train had departed from near Cicero and was heading toward Iowa. The train continued on its route at 9:30 a.m.
He said the train was carrying a variety of general freight items. He would not comment about whether the train was transporting hazardous materials.
Another battalion chief, Brock Herion, said responders did not have to deal with any hazmat situations or spills.
"There was damage to the engine due to the impact but nothing to the rail cars," Herion said.
Waldron said the circumstances of the incident are under investigation by local police.
Metra trains don't use those tracks, Baxa said.
WGN-TV video from the scene showed the cab and part of the trailer on one side of the track and the rest of the trailer on the other side, resting along an embankment. Mail was strewn throughout the area.
Mark Reynolds, Chicago district spokesman for the Postal Service, said the truck departed from a postal processing facility in nearby Carol Stream and was en route to post offices in Addison and Elmhurst. He said the post office didn't have details about the accident.
Reynolds said the mail at the scene was collected by Postal Service employees.
"A team from our Carol Stream plant and postal inspectors picked up the mail," Reynolds said. "It is being brought back to the Carol Stream plant for re-dispatching."
He said the post office will attempt to restore damaged mail, and an apology will be issued to those who receive damaged items.
