i have find a special car to measure distances (metric).

Hi BD1,

An imperial mile is 1609.334 metres so it's not far out and I doubt you would be able to get that sort of accuracy with Trainz ruler.
What did you think it should be?

Hi All,

I did make a metric "wagon" 25m long in 4 colours, for my own use a while back, but I can upload them if wanted.
They have 5m pointers on both sides and ends. (easy for overhead wireing)
Picture below.



If you want an Imperial set what length in feet would be the best. ( in metric 4 wagons = 100m, 10 = 1/4 km, 40 = 1km, different colour for each interval).

If someone can let me know I'll make them up and upload them.

52.8 ft or 16.09344m would be nice.

That would be 25 cars to the 1/4 mile.

Easy numbers to work with.

your cars is an other way, however the cars above show distances for 1m,too.

One car is 20m long an other 25m long. inside the care you see a white/blue boxes... this boxes are 1m long.

the yellow end of cars show the area, that can pass savely by the car like this..( minimum clearance outline/ railway loading gauge)

please note that we have different in europe etc.

These cars are very useful and are just what I need for a current WIP historical UK prototypical route.

Although metric, it’s easy to convert and more accurate for older Trainz versions. (I understand from comments in another thread, that later versions have been corrected for accuracy in Imperial measurement).

I’m using it to mark mile posts, for which a mile long train is useful, but not essential. However, I also need a train to find the positions at which gradients change. These changes are all different, so a train, which is effectively a well made mobile ruler, which can be pushed around the tracks in Surveyor, is for me, exactly what is needed. With these cars I can make up a length as required. Perfect.

When it’s downloaded you can appreciate the finer detail of the asset. I like the vertical marker post at the end of each car. Each metre square also has a clearly defined black line, making it easier to estimate part metre measurements by eye.

I also liked the coloured “stump” half way along the car. Another well thought out aid to help with accurately counting the distance in metres.

BTW, you don't need to be registered to download these items from the posted link in the OP (edit: I see that has now been corrected).

Hi YellowDoor,

I am not trying to take over your post, I was only showing what I had available all ready in Metric and am willing to help the Imperial world.
This is very basic and it is for length only and not for clearance (which is fantastic) but it works.

Christian, the designer for this car had told me, he will give a way the original mesh to design an imperial measure system. we in europe havn´t a deep knowledge about the right distances and clearences etc.

A lot of us are aware of the accuracy of the metric ruler. I’ve never had an issue with it; it works just fine.

The Imperial ruler in older Trainz versions is wrong and was a known issue according to experienced users. I understand that in later versions it works just fine.

Anyway, all of the above is a slight side issue because the ruler cannot measure track distances unless they are also perfectly straight. A soon as the track curves, the Trainz ruler cannot measure it.

A trainload of cars is a much more accurate way of doing it, although not entirely perfect. A consist of cars is a series of several small straight lines, so will always under-measure a curve to some degree, but is still the best method I know of. (As an aside, I'd have expected the Odometer in the Custom HUD in Driver to have been a good cross-check on the assumption that it should be a true measure. However it gives me a different reading each time I try it out between the sam two markers).

Provided an Imperial version of the cars is created accurately to start with, this could be an invaluable asset for placing mile posts. It would be nice if the cars could be scaled so that they could form a consist of 25 cars to quarter of a mile as suggested by GP30Fan.

Separate car colours are also useful and will hopefully be part of an Imperial series. A different coloured car could then be placed at the start and end of each 25-car quarter mile train. With several of these consists joined together, the placing of quarter mile markers would be a simple matter of looking for two similarly coloured cars, and placing the distance marker where they join.
 
Imperial set 52'8" also in 4 colours, 25 cars to the 1/4 mile.
