Can't Get TC Harlem to Run

OK,

Perhaps the brain power on this forum can help me. I have TC 1&2 and evertime I enter the Harlem Line Driver Mode I get the famous error below.

Shutdown.

The error above is meaningless as there seems to be a bazillion things that can cause this, but here is where I hope someone has any ideas.

I was unable to run the game at all untill I added the -intro=diable line to my options file. Now I can run Surveyor and Rail yard and I can run driver for the Metro line. As soon as I try to run driver for the Harlem either directly or by F2 in surveyor I get the error.

In addition I get the error when I run "Credits" from the main menu.

Now Yes, my drivers are all up to date, I have installed the software 6 times, I have manually cleaned the registry and re-nstalled. I have diabled all Anti-virus software, yes I am running as an administrator and in fact have UAC totally disabled at this time. I have tried Win XP compatability mode (yes I am running Vista, but others on the forum say it should work) I have tried DirectX and Open GL, yes I have deleted my Assest.dtx a thousand times. I have ran a hardware diagnostics and find no problems.

OK, now that I already ruled out most of your suggestions any other ideas. I am really stumped on this one. :'(

No I actually have the downloaded version and no it is not a pirated version.

So far the help desk has been stumped too so I am out 20 dollars.:'(

What are your computer specs? The first thing I suspect, is that it could be an IGP. I've seen this sort of behaviour with TRS06 on a computer that had a SiS900 chipset. (I stuck a demo on the laptop for a laugh.) However, I cannot confirm without any idication of the computer specifications.

Did you run TrainzDiag by any chance? Did you download the file again and tried using FDM? (Free Download Manager: http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/ )

There are a few other issues, but I/we really need more info to make the correct diagnosis.

I downloaed the file twice. Since it comes down as a packaged installer I find it hard to beleive there is a problem with any of the files, but hey you never can tell.

Yes, I did run a TrianDiag and everything looks normal to my untrained eyes.

The box is a Gateway FX7026 with pretty much everything still the way it was out of the box including a NVidia Geforce 8800GT. I am running Vista-64 and I know this is probably making the troubleshooting more challenging, but I have heard others running this on Vista with this card and like I said, only the Harlem line is having problems the other little tram line that came with it actually works just fine.

I also find it curious that the Credits don't work either. I am trying to figure out what the credits and Harlem line Driver have that the Metro line driver, Railyard and Surveyor don't.

The Contenet Manager Plus appears to be working so I might try downloading another route and see if I can run that.

hi gadair,
when you loaded TC, did you turn off your anti virus killer, and firewall?
if not that could be your problem, as the anti virus killer's will often block anything it see's as a threat, this include meadia players and download softwear and TC use's both.

Well I got it working :D kinda of.

I selected one of the Harlem scenarios in Surveyor then selected "Edit Session Rules" where I found an item called "Video" where it said to run intro.htm (or something like that) and deleted it.

I then saved that session as a diferent name and I can run that session. I still can't run the one that came with it becuase I can't modify a "read only session." There is obviously a problem with running these in game videos which explains why the credits don't work. So while there is obviously still some compatability issues this is a work around I can live with :) as I can at least run the Harlem now.

Once I figured it out it was a simple work around. I hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.

Sounds like you don't have a certain video codec the program is expecting to find. What version of Windows Media Player do you have?

It is version 11. I don't think it is a codec problem because I can run the videos directly when I double click on them in the video folder. It just seems to crash when they are called by TC.

In my spare time I would like to try to resolve this but like I said, at least I can use it now.

This may still be a Windows permission thing. Even though you disabled the UAC, the system is still going to use Administrator rights only without prompting you for permission.

The reason why I say this is because you can play the movies individually by navigating to the folders. The program does not have rights to the folders, but you do.

A quick test would be running the progam as administrator?

If this is the case then reinstall everything as administrator and run the program with the Run_As Admin option.

In addtion you might want to try setting all of *.exe files to run as administrator in the folders where you installed the program.

These are somthings to think about because I am running TRS2006, TC1&2 plus TS2009 under Vista 64-bit SP2(beta) and they all run fine. The only difference is I install and run all my programs as Administrator and because of this I've had no problems at all.

Good luck,

John

Once you turn off UAC you can't set Run as Administrator in the compatability screen. I will play with the folder permissions and see if it makes a difference.
