Can This Track Be Fixed?

I really like this track up close, but I really can't stand what happens to it at a distance. See photo. This is TRS2010 and the track is RBMN Shiny/Rusty.

I hate that it just turns into this gray line. Is there a way to modify the config file so this doesn't happen? My draw distance is turned up all the way. I have a pretty strong computer and video card as well.

This is a down to how the lod tree structure works; you could change all references’ to lod 1 track, but unless you have a Cray supper computer it’s not advisable. Trainz uses this lod tree structure to minimize load and if you just had the primary lod it would spend all your time trying to drive a route with such track in just drawing track. In other words poor old trainz gets the blame for only doing what it’s told to do. Setting the draw distance to max would only make matters worse, as can you imagine how long it takes to draw several miles of high resolution track? I know this from fact as one of my tracks that I forgot to change the lod .im files to theirs distance versions completely hung my 2010 and 2009. This is a nice looking track and the config file is perfect so I would cut your draw distance down and enjoy.

Have fun

That looks to be a reskin of my Victorian Railways track. Unfortunately, I made some pretty mistakes with the LOD meshes, which means that it sends to look odd in the distance. What you could try doing is adjust the 'lod-distance' tag (the highest value one) to a point further out (if it's 500, then set it to 1000, which means it'll go from 500m from the camera to 1000m from the camera, for example).

I do hope to completely rebuild my version of the VR track, however this won't update the reskinned versions that are available.

Yes indeed you are the original creator. Thanks, Zec. I changed the following values (in RED) in the config,

track
{
mesh-length 10

track-lod-tree
{
lod-distance 500
subdivisions 1

high-detail
{
subdivisions 1
lod-distance 250

Seems to have done the job, only 2010 just isn't having any of it lol. Seems that whatever it is that limits draw distance really doesn't like the track modified at all. Looks good in areas where there is only one or two tracks, but in yards forget it, 2010 loads about a 25' section of track and no ground textures or even the damn grid. And it's not like my computer can't handle it either. They really need to make that limiting thing be disabled.

I suppose I'll just deal with the short draw distance for the track until someone creates nice track for 2010 that works and looks as detailed as this track is.

Ah, yeah, that's probably my dodgy textures :) This was a very rough and ready track, basically just to see if I could get it to work. As it worked reasonably well in 09, it was released. However, it seems that the poor performance of the track isn't playing nice in 2010.

I do hope to rebuild it (with better textures) sometime soon. It's just getting the time to do it, in particular the LOD's... And getting the whole lot onto a single texture (literally, the whole set of tracks into 1 texture...).

Even NASA does not have a computer capable of running and beating Trainz.

This might be because TS2010 will start dropping objects and go weird if there's too much load on the system to prevent everything from crashing.Your LOD draw distance changes were a bit too much for the program and your computer to load all at once. You might want to try lower settings and work up from there.

Yes this track has incredible detail! That's why I'm choosing to use it. I look forward to the update when you get around to it.

@Deano5 Rofl!

@JCitron I'm going to continue to mess around with settings to see if I can optimize this track for my computer. Its not that my computer cant handle it, it's just that 2010 has a limiter installed so the game doesn't crash on less high end computers. Hopfully this will be fixed in a future service pack, or compensated with scenery objects. I'd rather see a service pack though, since no matter what kind of super computer you have, the limiter automatically kicks in and randomly drops and adds objects, which in my opinion is really distracting.
