calculating the length of a route

Hello to the world of trainz,
Is there a tool/method of measuring the length of a route for ts2010 that doesn't involve entering driver (ei: timing how long it takes to get from one end to the other at 60mph) or doing something complicated.
i would find it very helpful to get to grips with this because unless your route is in a straight line you don't know exactly how much track you've layed.
cheers,
Toby

There used to be a utility, that I can't remember the name of, that worked up to TRS2006. After that it was quirky. This tool would show you the length of your route in km or miles as well as change track and trackside objects. The latter tools were obsoleted in TS2010 and up. I do wish that ability of simply seeing the length of the route was in the current and future versions of Trainz.

The alternative is to enable the custom HUD, which shows the miles driven, and go for a ride from one end to the other.

Make a consist 1 mile/kilometers, and place it at one end of your route. At the end of your consist place a track mark, name it mile/kilometer 1, advance your consist so it's end is at the 1 mile/kilometer mark, add another track mark at the other end, name this mile/kilometer 2. Keep doing this until you reach the end of your route. There are mile and kilometer measuring sticks on the DLS or use the ruler in surveyor on a straight section of track to get your consist length. Save the consist in Surveyor so that you can use it again.

John,
I have done that but for a different reason. I did it to get the spacing correct when I re-signaled a route. The route was about 50 miles. That was not bad but I would not want to do MRL for example. 250 + miles.

I use it in AI instructions, in double track lines I use east & west destinations. I locate my signals at these mile posts and name the signals to the corresponding mile post & trackmark, track mark=BNSF MP 1.0W, Signal=B1W, are examples used on a multi RR tracked line.
