Buy Buy Alienware, Hello Hewlett Packard

Peanut Butter
Okay, so here's the story... My previous Alienware had a major system failure after an overclocking gone wrong.. Parents are pissed, and they could only afford a name brand HP. Here are my specs:

AMD Phenom x4 @ 3.00GHz
8GB DDR3 800MHz
ATI HD5450 512MB
1TB HDD
Blueray/Litescribe, ect...

Big question here is, what for graphics card could substitute for that 5450. It really sucks in Trainz with anything other than built-in Auran crap they call train cars. Sweet deal off ebay'd be nice, just gotta be looking for the right card..

Hi Brousey,
Recently I had problems with my 3 year old computer, it was running two Nvidia GT7600 cards in SLI.

One of the cards died so I pulled it out and just ran the computer with one GT7600 card. It still had good detail in TS2009.

A month later the other card started playing up so I replaced it with a Nvidia GT240 with 1024MB 128bit DDR3 memory.

Now I looked up a web site that ranks graphics card, the GT7600 is almost at the bottom of what they call Class 2, with the ATI HD5450 just above it.
The GT240 is well above those cards in the upper half of Class 2. ( But is still a budget card )

The review on the HD5450 card mentions that if DDR2 memory is used performance will suffer.

I installed the GT240 video card myself, and had problems cleaning out the old GT7600 drivers.
If your computer is still under warranty the dealer should fit another video card. However I would suggest you talk over fitting a new video card with your parents ....... or do you want another row with them?

Hope this helps,
Lindsay

Hey Lindsay. With my Alienware, I had an Nvidia 240GTS 1GB. After looking at a few crossfire and sli charts, dual 5450's don't really look like a big performance gain.

Either way, I'd like to have a three-way 295gtx sli setup, but that prolly won't happen...:D

ATI fix

Hello,
Actually In 2010 and 2009 you can change some settings to make the game not look so bad.
1. Open the launcher.
2. Options
3. Display Settings (Make sure Direct X 9.0 is installed)
4. Check direct x as the display mode.
5. advanced settings.
6. Check disable hardware TL.
7. Hit ok.
May work in some older versions of trainz. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 and it worked for me.
Hope this helps,
