Building Stations

Learning... slowly!
So, I find that most of the stations when route building are a bit too generic for my liking. Is there a kind of 'kit' to build platforms to whatever shape you need within surveyor or do you have to create them specially?

Unless you're trying to recreate an existing and possibly iconic station, you can mix and match a wide variety of objects to give each station its unique look. And not every object has to be designed for a station to be used in one. Of course if you want to, you can always create that special object to give your station that little bit extra.

AJS station kit?

Ben

Absolutely. Go here for Andi's tutorial and FAQ. It's a bit harder than just picking up a ready made station from the DLS but since you want a custom station...

Or, you can build your own from scratch using 3D modelling tools which is even harder but more fun. :hehe:

There are also some platforms that go from one width to another to enable a platform going from its wide portion to a very much narrower one.

I always use the range of tarmac platform surfaces by tmz06003, which combined with a platform edge by nexusdj, give the best results in my humble opinion and are totally flexible. So far, I haven't been stuck when modelling a platform using these.

I completely agree with pfx. Having separate platform edge splines and platform surface splines gives a much more realistic and flexible look in my opinion. I often use Platform Tarmac Edge (Slabs/Safety Line) Only by tmz06003 and the Platform Tarmac Surface range by nexusdj and tmz06003. There are lots of assets to use when building your own stations. You can also passenger enable them by placing AJS Invisible stations every so often along a platform or using Scottish's DMT range :)

You could try my range of platforms, on the DLS - search for "C+ PL" or my username. There are sizes from 2m to 10m wide (in 1m increments) with different white line markings and a variety of ramps and other bits. It is possible to make curved and tapering platforms by overlapping two (with one a fraction lower than the other to eliminate flickering).

Unless otherwise mentioned in the license text you may re-skin these assets and publish them to the DLS, so if you want different type of surface etc. it's possible.

I second what the others have said here regarding AJS station kit. There are so many buildings, station shelters, station houses, platform canopies, and other details you can put down to make quite unique stations. You don't indicate where you are located, but even in the US and Canada, there is no reason why you can't use buildings from Europe as it's not uncommon to see a bit of everything depending upon the population that settled the area, or the style of the neighborhood where the stations are built. You do have to keep in mind though that many railroads did have some utilitarian platforms in the modern times. These make use of concrete, steel, and glass while those from the Victorian period are a bit more fancy.
