BSOD While Patching

Hi,

Well, I was trying to bring my install of RS 12 to current (47772 to 58414) I was going in order and everything was going fine. I was installing the 3rd patch (49922 to 57720) and all was ok till my PC BSOD'd. I can't continue where I left off, as I get an error that says " This patch is not applicable to your current installation version. I tried going one patch back and I get the same message. I tried the next patch and it ran for a little bit and then gave me an error saying existing file is damaged and cannot be patched. If I try to launch the sim, I get a message saying the entry point cannot be found.

Was I doing everything correctly or did I do something wrong? I downloaded all the patches and was installing them one by
one.
Where do I go from here? Is there a way to fix the database without reinstalling the sim, and starting from square 1? with 1800 plus content updates.

Any advice would be appreciated..

I have an AMD quad core PC w/ 4 gigs of RAM and an Nvidia GTX 650 Graphics card with 2 gigs of RAM

You're basically going to have to reinstall the game. Don't delete the old copy if you have content you want to recover, though I'd import it via CMP after applying patches.

A BSOD could be caused by any number of things, though I'd be most worried about my CPU overheating on an otherwise stable and well-maintained system. Make sure the fan is on it good. It might help to run a temp program like Realtemp and see how hot your CPU is getting under load while playing Trainz or something else.

Thanks for the reply. It's been a year or more since I had a BSOD. I maintain the system as best I can, by blowing it out and file cleaning.. I will try the install again and see what happens. Do I need to do anything in between installing each patch? Is it necessary to patch it to current? What are the pros and cons.

Thanks

If it were me, I'd only patch to 49922. The SP1 patch (58414) has been the subject of a lot of controversy, and there is an active thread discussing this that I just posted to a minute ago about SP1 in this section of the forum. There are other pro/con threads in the TS12 forum. I don't really want to threadjack this one since the issues are already being discussed, but some people are happy and some are not. It depends on what you think you need.

As for the BSOD, you don't really need to do anything special, though I advise installing to someplace other than your Program Files directory. If you choose to do that and are running Windows Vista/7/8, you need to run as Administrator. I find just installing to another drive or partition is cleaner, and might give some performance improvement if that second drive is on a separate physical disk, or has lots of free space. Just patch in the order presented i.e. I think you have to patch to an intermediate build of 48249, IIRC, and then to 49922. If you want to patch to 58414 (SP1), you can do so from there.

I'm sorry I did not include that. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1

I have a 1tb hard drive sitting idle, I don't know why I didn't think of putting it on there to begin with.. I will install it there and hope for the best :-)

That's interesting then. Are you familiar with the Windows Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc)?

Shane

I have used it in the past when I was having a constant BSOD issue. It turned out the the BIOS was out of date. Once I updated it, I never had the issue again till now. I am in the middle of installing TS12 again and updating the content files. I think before going any further, I am going to check the drivers and make sure everyone is up to date.. Also look at the event file and see why it crashed.. I think I still have the "why did I crash" program on the windows box somewhere.

Hopefully that will sort it. Be aware that if it's an external drive, there have been a couple of threads on here regarding loss of USB connectivity involving said drives.

Thank you for your help and advice, I appreciate it. I have your tutorials bookmarked and have been looking thru them. Thank you as well for writing them..

No problem - when it comes to some of the Trainz technical issues, I've normally either got a tutorial, guide, or some advice on dealing with it.
