Bring Back the Mail Train!!

Lacker

Border Reiver
Hi All,
It was my birthday yesterday, and my Daughter-in-Law sent me a present via Royal Mail Special Delivery. She paid a considerable extra sum to guarantee delivery before 1300hrs. It didn't happen,so she phoned up RM to find out why,and demand a refund.Their excuse was,the winds were too high for the planes to take the mail up north and all deliveries were delayed.

In the days of the mail train, this would never have happened.Nothing short of War,snowdrifts, robberies,or simply falling off the rails, would have prevented the mail getting through. How times have changed and it's called progress!!!

Regards Bruce

Happy B'day Brucie ..... catchin up on me LOL

You can of course wait for a Royal Mail Train from Paulz Trainz (which isin the works)

It picks up mail and drops too, but it doesnt deliver to houses (yet), need a RM horse wagon or van !!

Pick out a loco (or 2) for a belated b'day pressie !!!

While the D train went through on its way to Frankfurt, I managed to snap a picture of it passing my parked passenger train as I waited for it to pass.

Are there any countries,in western Europe, that still use Mail Trains?

Regards Bruce

England and Scotland spring to mind but I'm on the West coast. EMU's only. not strictly mail trains in the sense of TPO's but they do carry mail. I take it the RM depot at Low Gill closed.
belated greetings.

Why are they flying mail around in a country as small as ours? It's environmental madness!

fran1---yes I can understand that, getting the mail to out of the way places.Makes sense. I must admit I was thinking of the old night mails with the mobile sorting offices etc.

Paulzw2--- you will get no argument from me on that score.I expect RM will tell you it is quicker and more efficient. I am sure it is less reliable.

regards Bruce

hey Paulsw, used to live in Streatham !!!

Air Mail is faster than running a van or train, and as most mail these days is commercial, it pays.

To my knowledge no "western" country still does mail trains, perhaps some countries in the Communist Bloc do, but I honestly don't know.

P.S. It might be of interest to you to know that in Losheim is a railway post museum with a small collection of postal wagons.
