Brake problem

Hi;
TS2010, SP3.
I had this interesting problem with the brakes on a mile long train with 4 locos.

I had stopped the train, then started reversing to drop off a few cars on a siding.
When I went to move the train forward again, to complete the decoupling process, I found that the brakes would not release completely.
I was in cab mode, and the indication in the window said "released", but the brake cylinder was still at 56psi.

I tried applying, and releasing the brakes several times, but the problem persisted. The brake cylinders would not drop below 56.

I was able to move the train (minus the uncoupled cars) forward by moving the throttle way up.
I uncoupled the locos from the train, and drove them a short distance from the train. The brakes were still at 56psi.
Then I uncoupled the locos so I now had two separate sets of two each.
I moved the front set away from the rear set. The brakes in both sets were at 56psi.
I tried applying and releasing the brakes on the lead set of locos, but the problem persisted.
Then I went to the other set of locos, and was able to release the brakes by applying, then releasing. The first set still had the problem.
Then I moved the rear set of locos up to couple them back up to the front set. Now, all locos have the brakes released, and working properly.

While this appeared to be a prototypical problem, and I was able to fix it using prototypical actions (never left the session, or did anything strange in the game), I have never seen it before.

Could this be a random problem that has been coded into the loco script, or into TS2010? I am more inclined to think it is a bug in either the loco or the game.

Hi FW,

I have had a similar problem in both 2009 and 2010 in the past. It does not happen very often but at the time I thought it was something to do with one loco being in the wrong gear, in other words trying to go opposite ways. I got out of it by changing the direction of the loco I was driving and shunting back into the other loco, just slitely, the brakes then released normally when I changed direction again to go forward.

Cheers,

Thanks for that advice. I never tried reversing the locos. Next time it occurs, I'll try that.
At least it was a prototypical type of failure, not some weird thing that could only happen in the game. I had at least one crossing blocked while I tried to resolve the problem.

The pressure in the brake cylinder in just on the loco's, to get this to release press the D key on you're keyboard which preforms the act of bailing the brakes. In real railroading when we make a brake application we bail right away keeping the brakes on the engines released at all times, so only the brakes on the train apply. The only time this is not done is when we only have engines with no cars, or when the number of cars is so little (under 10) that we need the engine brakes for extra stopping power.

Thanks for the help. I have the keyboard shortcut sheet that came with TS2006, but I purchased TS2009 and TS2010 by download only, so didn't get a sheet. I am assuming that the 2006 shortcuts are good for TS2010.

I had this problem again today, after dropping some cars off in the yard and starting up again. The locos would not release the brakes fully.
I tried the D key many times but it did nothing.

Then I moved to the 3rd loco that I had also set off in the yard, and released the brakes on it, thinking that when I went back to the lead loco on the train, the brakes would release, as they did the last time I had this problem.
But this time, I could not get the brakes to release by pressing the usual keys.

So, I swiveled in my engineer's seat, and looked at the brake lever. It was fully applied! I moved the lever with the mouse, and the brakes released.
I don't know why the keyboard shortcuts stop working after an uncouple/couple move. But next time I know what to do.

look in the back of the book for 10 there si a list od short cuts

I'm assuming "book" you are talking about is online manual. I'll look at it, and if anything is different from the 2006 sheet I have, I'll print it out.

Thanks
