BR Steam Loco data

Does anybody have any hard data regarding British Railways steam locomotive acceleration and braking?

I have recently run a BR "Jubilee" with an 8 coach train over a measured 3mile length of track with a 1 mile extension for braking. At the 3 mile marker it had reached 43mph (is that realistic?????), and came to a stop after 4000ft. If that same train was to brake from 80mph, it would obviously exceed the 1 mile braking distance. An LMS "Coronation" with the same train reached 56mph at the 3 mile marker (not surprisingly faster than a "Jubilee"!), and over shot the 1 mile braking distance!

If anybody can give me data such as..............

x locomotive at best acceleration will reach a speed of x/mph in x/mins (or x/distance), and will take x/mins (or x/distance) to come to stop from that speed

..... I would love to hear from you!

Thx. Colin.

I picked up an old mag last night which has some timed runs in with rebuilt Merchant Navy's on the SR line between Waterloo and Exeter/Southampton in the 1960's.

Picking out a few typical details of the 12/13 coach runs from standing starts:

miles mph
1.1 40
3.1 60/65
6.95 85/90

EDIT: these latter two were down a 1 in 250 bank.

These are probably close to the best runs ever achieved, which is why they were published. The writer Cecil J Allen regarded the MN boilers as having no rivals for power output among BR steam engines.

Sorry no info on braking distances.

Thx Stovepipe and Blackwatch. Info much appreciated. Re the braking distance, I am given to understand that as a result of a 1 mile signal spacing on a 90mph stretch of track, there-in is the braking limit! This means that I have some more work to do with the decel data in various loco specs!

Thx again. Colin.
