Blah routes

There are some routes out there that I like more than others, but I would never call any route on the DLS crappy. Each one is unique and the creation of some proud creator and deserves our thanks.
Route creation is one of the most time consuming activities in this past-time of ours. Realistic routes can take hundreds and even thousands of hours to create, yet, these routes are offered to us on the DLS for free free. You'll get no gripes from me. I appreciate each and every one. Thanks to all creators.

I don't appreciate being called an "Ignoramus" or a "Flamer" mr. smartie. I was only saying that there are a lot of crappy routes out there with crappy scenery that shouldn't have been uploaded in the first place. And I HAVE a life thank you.

You still haven't given us an example of your own work...

And, maybe check the date they were released... Content released for UTC will have less detail. It is made for a game that is atleast 6 (I think 7 now) years old...

You say they should never have been uploaded? Well, one could say the same about a lot of reskins. Oh yes, Auran should never have made paintshed either... Oh wait, this is how people start! By uploading their layouts, they can get constructive criticism on how to make their work better.

You don't have to download them, you also don't have to use them. By commenting the way you have, your basically saying that no one has the right to release their creations. I would consider my first two layouts that I released to be crappy by comparison to my present ones. But I wanted to release them back then for other to have a play with.

Unfortunately, it's people like you who turn people away from creating...

If I had someone turn around to me and say I'm not allowed to upload a layout because it doen't meet their expectations, I would most likely tell them to get lost, and say it's my content to do what I want to with and that you have no right to tell me what I can and can't upload.

Again, you don't have to download them. But they have every right to upload them and to share them with you. It does take a lot of courage to upload an item to the DLS after all, especially the first time... Apparently you don't have any content on the DLS. This says to me that you are too scared of comments you may recieve, such as comments like your own...

But hey, as before. You don't have to download them. If you don't like them, delete them...

Could you try my Marooma one you seem to be one who is not afraid to say something when there is a problem ( All though i admit theres a thousand problems with my Marooma route:hehe: )

Routes are made that interest the creator and cover every type of route and interest. They are usually NOT made specifically to please everybody downloading them. Unfortunately the current negative attitude to freeeware producers of routes and content can only produce less creators who are willing to make their content and routes available for others on the DS and might go down the payware route or use other sites to make theit content available, etc........ This point seems to be overlooked by many who post negatively.......... Barry P.S. Very few would like my routes I am sure, as my interestS are c1800 and mainly UK canals and coastal sailing...in trainz and other simulators. Barry.

Wow you are one cocky user...........

Let's make this very simple to understand.
Most Content creators, whether it be rolling stock, buildings, routes or what not DO NOT create simply for YOUR pleasure. They create for their own pleasure or for what they need. They release to the public not because they HAVE TO but because they wish to share their hard work with everyone.

And then there are people like you. They come along just as cocky as you do here and complain. Guess what results? Those creators are not paid to put of with this sort of nonsense. They leave, the community falls apart.

All of your posts have shown nothing of any skill level. Unless you want to make an enemy of the forums I suggest you put your money where your mouth is and show us what you have before you start badmouthing others.

As the old proverb goes, don't look at the spec in your bother's eye until you have removed the log from your own.

It doesn't matter a single bit if you INTENDED to anger users, you have. THINK before you post something, blurting out whatever runs through your mind will end you up in some very nasty places.

The beauty of having "Surveyor" is ................................
After downloading a route, if there are aspects of the route that don't match your expectations or likes, you have the wherewithal to alter/change things to be more to your liking, for your own use (you just can't upload it without permission).
I suggest that instead of criticising others, your put your creative talents (if you possess any) to use, and show us what you can do.

If you have your own routes that are so good why do you continue to download our inferior attempts to create a route that meets your high standards. We at least had the guts to upload & show the world what we have done.Good or bad at least we give it a go & try to put something back into this game & community to share with others.

I create small to medium modules to add into routes I enjoy making them & if I think there up to my standards not yours I will upload them it's up to you to decide if you want to use them or not.

I have downloaded routes which vary from the most complicated & detailed I've seen to a loop on a blank base board.I have never commented on the lack of detail or effort put into a route.

That's not the point the point of the whole exercise is to enjoy what you are doing. If you create something & find enjoyment in doing it why not share it.

I have seen people leave this community over comments similar to yours & so far I have seen nothing to show from your creative talents. So when will you be uploading these interesting routes of yours that are that are so realistic. Some screen shots of what we will be treated to will be good.

Dave

^ Thank you.

BTW, is there anyone out there who agrees with me? I never meant to offend anyone. And I apologize if I did.

I think you've offended practically everyone who's ever uploaded a route, quite frankly. Sure, I've downloaded a few routes and not found them to my taste, but stating that 99% of routes on the DLS are 'crappy' is a great way to get yourself on quite a few ignore lists. As someone who has asked for, and received a fair amount of help from the community, I'm sure that you don't want that.

Anyone who uploads to the DLS is putting their work (time, effort, care, a small piece of themselves) up to public scrutiny. Personally, I find myself quite attached to my creations, and every word of praise and appreciation brightens my day. Until you've actually done this, I don't suppose you'll actually appreciate how it feels, and how it feels to receive this kind of blanket criticism. I don't suppose you've downloaded either of my published routes, but your attitude is hurtful irrespective of whether it refers to my work or the hard work of other community members. Frankly I'd prefer you not to download my work.

As far as your apology goes, I guess it will be accepted in the same measure as you adjust your (frankly crappy) attitude.

Paul

p.s. @aodgh0st - If it's over 20Mb (I think) you need to contact helpdesk to make sure the upload doesn't bounce. Otherwise - if you like it, then some of the rest of us will, and if you ask, there are plenty of folks who will help you make it even better.

Problem is there are a lot of routes. You need a filter of some type, if it comes from TPR it's probably OK provided you aren't looking for UK tram lines. The number of downloads from the DLS gives some indication, but again if you are looking for GWR Broad Gauge there isn't a lot of choice.

Many routes do not have the correct region showing which probably doesn't help. Perhaps have a dig through the on line magazines they sometimes have reviews of routes other than that stick to creators that have similar tastes to yourself.

Perhaps rather than say crappy routes say you're having difficulty finding routes that you like, and saying what your preferences are.

I must confess I find a small UK branch line much more interesting than a US route but I probably won't call the US routes crappy, dull to my eyes maybe.

Cheerio John

...well said John! Words, expressed properly, can show our preferences without being done so distastefully. I can agree with davesnow in that there are a good many routes of various quality available. We each bring something to the table when we take the time and energy to build routes then make them available to others. Whether we end up enjoying those we download depends on a number of things however, in the end, someone, somewhere took the time build them and make them available to me/us..........I/we should therefore be grateful.

I just wish I could download some routes and scenarios. I'm stuck with dial-up only where I live. (can't afford satellite at 70 bux a month) :( I did download one route with Niagra falls on it. It took over 5 hours to get the waterfalls.

Well, I suppose I have DLoaded at least 50-60 routes from the DLS and CMP... and to be quite honest, 99% of them are blah. Anyone else out there get frustrated DLoading crappy routes?

Well, DaveSnow, you've only downloaded 60 routes off the DLS from a possible 2,900, is that all !!!!!!! Not much research gone on there then is there.....Go away and download all the others, and then I'm sure you will find plenty more wonderfully created layouts to entertain your little mind, and then there's all those from 3rd party websites, around the world uniquely done, so, possibly another 75 - 100 routes there, and it's taken me over 4 years to download every route, so hopefully we won't be hearing from you again until say, 2012.........
And as a footnote, even though many of the routes I downloaded, I found out later were not to my liking, but I certainly would NEVER, EVER publicly say they were crap. Sheeeeeeeesh man, consider yourself well and truly b***ocked by every layout creator around the globe.

Cheerio.

I bitterly resent davesnow's comments.I do not have the ability to make good quality routes for myself. For the past 4.5 years,I have relied on the work of others to give me hundreds of hours of entertainment. To have their work denegrated,in such a cavalier manner,is frankly appalling. To all creators of all content, whatever the quality,I say a big and heartfelt thank-you.Please keep it coming.
Regards Bruce

Well, I suppose I have DLoaded at least 50-60 routes from the DLS and CMP... and to be quite honest, 99% of them are blah. By that I mean, basically static and unrealistic. No imagination or realism at all. Just a few buildings laid down here and there in bland surroundings, roads plopped down anywhere with no thought to function... trees spaced out as if they were planted in an orchard, and too sparse to be attractive, and the same type and height. Ground textures in one color with no variation.. .No telephone poles or fences to break the monotony. . . no signals, signs, billboards, etc...

Some of these routes I can tell the creator spent a lot of time laying the track because it is perfect--- no unreal sharp turns, nice turnouts, pretty yards, etc. But the scenery is just so bland that to take a ride down the tracks becomes an experiment in boredom!

I've just gone back to my own created routes where I try my darnest to make it look as realistic as I can so the ride in the cab is interesting at least.

I KNOW there must be a few routes out there that are realistic, but outside of "Eastern Kentucky", "Murchison" and the "Darjeeling Himalayan" routes, I haven't seen many. Mind you, I have found a few others that have beautiful scenery, but even these lack session functionality.

Anyone else out there get frustrated DLoading crappy routes?

If you like realisim, try the Cumberland to Connellsville route. It consists of the Western Maryland and B&O railroads from Cumberland Md to Connellsville Pa, approx 100 miles in length. It was made from 2 of Fishlipsatwork's HOG generated maps, and a third map that I generated, using Transdem, all combined to form the route. You can find it on TPR's download station at this site:http://trainzproroutes.com/downloads/index.php?act=view&id=792
I would have uploaded it to Auran's download center, except that it was too large.

Good luck, Joe

Hmmmmmm......

I am pretty new and have not yet submitted a layout as I don't even know how yet. I have created several that I feel have great scenery and details, but I know that some of my trackwork is not prototypical. I don't mean sharp turns or crazy grades, I just don't have enough knowledge about yards and signals and such to be happy with my work yet. Also, I have alot of interest in different eras and locations of American railroads, so I work on one layout for a week or so until I get sick of it and tinker with another. What I would like really is someone to colaborate with, who could create a good prototypical route with working industries and let me scenic it. I really enjoy the scenery creating part although I do realize it compromises performance. I am trying to find a good balance, and I too realize that most detail needs only to be near the tracks with more sparse detail in the background. Much like forced perspective.

I've downloaded some that I am amazed that they were released, but others are amazing computer friendly and well done. Im one of those people who can not landscape to save my life, so if I were to make a route, it would look awful, but I do try my best. While I'll never release any of my routes, I could understand seeing them up on the DLS.

And that's exactly the point, isn't it? We are a great many very different people (users) with different tastes and abilities.

I too just love to create pretty imaginary "worlds", just for the joy of creating. I do put decent tracks on (that you won't drive off), and I like to add many different industries and such, so you have plenty "to do" in there. But I haven't the first idea of track signals and all that stuff (actually my husband is the main driver in the family), so I'm sure some of you train buffs would be horrified at my route. The thing is that if I upload this route (and I probably will, once it's finished) somebody else can download it and add whatever they feel lacking. In the same way, I can download a route with fantastic tracks and add my own landscaping whichever way I like.

I have already downloaded a number of routes, and I like every single one of them (and THANK YOU VERY KINDLY to whomever created them). Some have great landscape, some have great tracks, some have an industry I hadn't seen before, and so on. They ALL have something to offer in their own unique way, even if it's "only" to inspire me to create something of my own.

If you are looking at making your own route and have problems signaling, there is a Signal guide in one of the sub-folders of the Docs folder (it is a different sub-folder in each version), look for the PDF with Signal in the name. TRS2006 one is limited to NSW signals, Classics to USA. Also search for an online tutorial and bookmark it, here's one I have probably not the only one.
