Banner above active industry

What is the purpose of the banner that appears above an industry with numbers like 256/10000000 and what looks like a thumbnail identifying the industry?

Current quantity and Maximum quantity of the industry's product.

You can turn that product "banner" on or off, or to settings in between "on" and "off", from the Driver Display Menu (the 4th icon from the top left, the one that looks like a video monitor) and then select Commodity Overlay.
