I find you get more realistic results if you lay your preferred ballast followed by small quantities of a second and perhaps third ballast, plus traces of the surrounding landscape such as grass, gravel or perhaps sand etc. Hold down the '[' key to rotate the direction of your textures as you lay them and be light and fairly quick on the mouse as you would if you were painting a picture when adding the additional textures.
