Backing up Trainz '10 to external drive

Hello all,

I am wanting to back up my installation of Trainz '10, completely. If I copy the entire contents of the "Auran" folder to an external drive, along with keeping the installation disc, would this be considered a complete backup of the program, CDP's and everything? Basically, would this type of backup include all routes and custom content, or would it require more than a simple copy of the "Auran" folder? I've been working on a large route and one of my main goals is to get it saved in a manner that it will be ready to go in the state it's in, should I need to utilize the back-up.

Hi there,

All you really need to back up to keep your route and other downloaded and created content is the UserData folder. All content is stored in there, as are your screenshots.

But yes, copying the Auran folder would be a backup of the entire programme. Although only backing up the content as well as keeping the installation disks just in case would be a smaller backup in terms of filesize.

Kieran is correct. I have a complete copy of both TS12 and 10 on a separate disk drive; just in case. I started out by copying the complete programs from my primary drive to the secondary drive. Now I occasionally back up my User Content files to those programs. If you have a particular route you want to make sure doesn't get lost, also save it as a CDP (in Content Manager highlight the route then right click on it and click 'save to CDP'). You can then store the CDP at another location (I do that for all the routes and sessions I create). Note that the saved CDP does not have any content attached, all of that remains in your user content files. If you reload Trainz from a disk, you will need to import all your user content from your original User Content File via the Content Manager. In the past I have attempted to jump that process by simply deleting the new User Content File in my newly installed game and have then copy my old User File across in its place - it doesn't work. You have to actually import all the content which can be a mammoth task.
