does anyone know how to solve a problem with a steam locomotive in HO-scale,because the last 2-10-0 I have is seaboard airline locomotive #514 [which has a wire problem and does not work] and now another problem just came up,this time with my unlettered and unnumbered version, the locomotive does not move but the headlight responds and the only way I can get it to respond is have a bigger steam engine push it from behind and I don't know if it is the gears were misalined because I have ordered it from trainworld and when it first arrived to start hauling trains on my railroad,I did not have this problem, and I was wondering if anyone who owns this type of locomotive can help me out, thanks!:(

I had this problem with an N-scale locomotive I had many years ago. Check the traction tyres and ensure there are any on the wheels. If the gears are binding, you mau need to add some lubrication to the gears. This maybe why the engine can't pull the load on its own.

Regarding the bad wiring. Get a DVM and trace the connections. It maybe simple enough to replace the lead with another one.

You know, in all this chaos, I forgot this thread is for model trains too!

Anyway, it's likely a gear locking up in the engine, as you say it doesn't move by itself, yet will move if another engine (and likely, you as well) moves it.

I'd recommend looking for a local hobby shop for them to fix this as someone new to repairs is likely to break something more important. Until then, you've solved your problem already: run it as a helper engine

I'd recommend not sending it to Bachmann for repair, as I believe they charge $40 for repair even if you've had the locomotive under a year. Apparently their warranty covers its first year out of the factory, even if all it does is sit on a store shelf. This is my experience:

A 70 ton (old version with 2 motors) bought at a train show and a transformer part of a set from Christmas both burnt out around the same time. I had had both for under 6 months. They wanted me to pay $20 each. I had my dad call and complain to them and it ended up they fixed the 70 ton for free, I got the old one back (to use the working motor for something) and the transformer for $10. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. But it was a huge hassle. Right now I'm having problems with a 2-8-0 and would almost rather buy a new one and put this shell on the new one than send it back but in this case it might be cheaper. I've had it over a year since I bought it with the 70 ton.

Thanks for the replies, guys, but I do start questioning the design work on these steam locomotives which may look good but it is the wire connections that concerns me,especially the modern 4-4-0 and USRA 4-8-2 which I own!;)

what about wireless tethers!

And now that I think about it,id rather have the decoder inside the locomotive and that way,the chaotic connction of wires between locomotive and tender would be less chaotic if it had a wireless tether!;)

does anyone here know where I can find replacement gears for this engine,I tried looking on the internet but I'm not having good luck and the problem is,the locomotive is too delicate to take apart to identify the problem and put it back together again!:(

Northwest Shorline (NWSL) may have them. I agree about having all the electronics in the loco but unfortunately I don't think this is easily possible.

thanks for your help, she is out of service until I can find the parts I'm looking for, until then I'll use my USRA heavy 4-8-2 mountain to cover for the 2-10-0!;)

Let me know if they have them. If they don't I'll see if I can think of anyone else who may.

I'm on their site but the problem is, I don't know what type of gears, motors and the belt the engine uses, any help?

thanks!;)
