This site has information on the actual set up of AWS boards in real life.

In terms of AWS in Trainz there are only a few locomotives with working AWS (mainly Class 37s) However you can still add AWS Ramps/Magnets on the track via the Track Objects tab in the Lay Tracks Window.
AWS Assets:
AWS Permanent Magnet,<kuid2:60850:23051:5>
AWS Permanent Magnet Bidirectional,<kuid2:60850:23052:5>

Hi Dan, this sounds like you are missing the AWS TRIGGER.
When you type in AWS in the Trainz searchbox, you will find the AWS RAMPS along with an AWS TRIGGER,
Use the AWS TRIGGER and place it on the track, where it says SIGNAL, place the signal, and where it says AWS, place either the AWS RAMP or the AWS RAMP BI-DIRECTIONAL, the AWS RAMP BI-DIRECTIONAL is a two way ramp, so it's better used on a single line with a signal in the opposite direction.
Please note, not all UK trains are fitted with AWS, so you might get a bell, you might not, depends on what engine you are using, AWS bell will not sound if in AI mode, only when you are the driver. With regards to the Class 50, I'm sure these are fitted with AWS, so you should get the bell sound if the track is clear and you have a line of greens.

Dan are you using Bloodnok's AWS system or the one that's in the Railwaves payware signal pack ?
Bloodnok's system just requires you to place one of his AWS ramps before the signal you want it to use .
The permanent magnet is used is situations where you only want to give a driver a warning . Like on the approach to an advance speed restriction board (upside down yellow triangle) or at the warning board for a temporary speed restriction (track works etc) or at on the approach to a 2 aspect termination signal (this only shows red or 1 yellow)
This will only operate in one direction of travel .
You need to place this with the angled chequer plate facing oncoming trains
Permanent magnet Bidirectional .
Same as above but will give a warning indication in both directions of travel and doesn't matter which way it faces on the track .
AWS Ramp :
This is the one you need to place before one of Bloodnok's signals (my Dorman signals use the same scripting and work the same as Bloodnok's) .
This will only work in one direction of travel .
Place the chequered plate end facing towards oncoming trains about 185 metres before the signal .
AWS Ramp bidirectional :
Used in situations on lines where you have trains travelling in both directions over the same line .
An easy way to illustrate it's use :

You forgot just one thing.
My advice for ease of setup, don't bother with the Railwaves stuff, Bloodnoks stuff is far better in terms of AWS, it just requires a ramp and it finds the signal for you (Snowys requires you to set each parameter seperately). Also, the AWS systems can't be mixed, although there is also no AWS rule for Bloodnoks system for other cabs, the rule thats there, allows you to turn it off, unless someone has developed an AWS rule.
Bloodnok has an AWS Rule (should be built in in 2006 onwards) that you can apply to any loco . It creates an AWS HUD in which you'll find the warning Sunflower and also the cancellation button . It also gives you the option to have full AWS (control of train brakes)
Passive (Full sounds but it wont take control of the brake if you don't cancel AWS)

The rule is in use in my Midshire route session with the Pendolino.
