AWFUL lag in areas with just track and grid.

3Ds MAX will be my demise
G'day! :(

I have been trying to get my PC serviced for ages, but to no avail. Lag is getting worse and worse. It lags with track and grid... I'm using TS2009. I was told my PC can run games top notch, I have been lied to. It can't even run FMS without lagging. (FMS is a game for traing RC Plane pilots that only needs 150mb of RAM to run) On average, without track and just baseboard, I get 50FPS, but put one train and track and go driver, an average of 10-15FPS. Any recommendations or solutions to stop it lagging? I'm getting sick of it.

Cheers... :(

Jake.

PM me, might be able to help you as I live in the same city.

There is an expression you can't get there from here.

You'll spot your cpu on the last page at the bottom. You may wish to go back and talk to your supplier if they told you it could run games top notch. You'll probably find out they meant it can run some games rather than all games.

I didn't look at the rest of the machine.

Ouch! The 1400 is at the bottom of the list. The best graphics card in the world would not help. I am using an Intel i5 and 4 GB of RAM. This computer struggles with parts of some routes using on-board Intel graphics. I am hoping to upgrade to a GT 430 in the very near future. Anything stronger requires Two PCIx16 slots and I only have one available. Another limitation is my 300W PS.

Good Luck, tomurban

Have a look at the power requirements of the more modern AMD 40 nm line. A 300 watt power supply is a bit restrictive. Newegg have the watts needed for some video cards in their listings.

HD 5670 doesn't draw a lot of power.

ati video card

i am using a xfx 6950 and trainz 2010 runs nearly flawless at max settings, just over 200 bucks is a steal,i wouldnt use a Celeron to run pacman lol, all jokes aside its time for an upgrade, pc parts are really cheap right now:)

Thanks for the info John. I have not looked at ATI cards since I have very good results with nVidia.

I'm not disputing that nVidia gives good results but my impression is they draw more power than AMD in the modern lower power range which has an impact when using a lowish power supply.

Changing a power supply means checking to see it has the right number and type of power connectors on it and its not as simple as once it was. I just been sorting out a PC, great specs but only two SATA power supply connectors on the power supply, one for the DVD drive the other for the hard drive. Yes there is space in the box for another six drives but the power supply doesn't have the right type of connectors for more sata disk drives.

However a Celeron has the same pin out as other intel processors so choose very carefully and you can just do a brain transplant and switch processors.

It must have been an older PSU.
I recently put a corsair 850watt in and you could not put in enough hard/dvd drives to use the power connectors supplied.

John: The Gt 430 is rated at 49W max under full load according to the nvidia website. My 300w PS should handle that easily as my maximum current draw at present running TRAINZ 09 with the on-board graphics is in the 70-75W range (using Kill A Watt). The specs are very similiar to the Sapphire 5570 and I suspect the cards are about equal performance wise (However, I did not see any mention of OpenGL support). I like the Sapphire 5670, but because of the thick heatsink, fans and shroud it take up the width of two slots and interfere with the HD bracket (This is also true of some low profile 430's).

As has been suggested you can get a better cpu.
According to the Intel site yours is a socket 775 cpu which uses a max of 75watt. There are still plenty of socket 775 cpu's on the market up to 3.3ghz core duo's and 3 ghz quad core.

Tomurban,
Have a look at Guru3D.com for a test on the Gt 430. it may help on your choice of card.

At 49 w max it's just shot to the top of my video cards for low power supply list. The AMD was 61 watts I think.

I hadn't realised the on board graphic draw was so high I assume it can be disabled in the Bios to save the 70 watts.

Thanks John

John: The 70-75W that I was referring to is the total system draw. I don't know how much current the on-board graphics is using but I would guess about 20W. It's the Intel HD graphics chipset using 1GB of shared RAM.

I wonder if we could pin it down some how. I'd always thought it couldn't be disabled so it didn't draw power but I'd like to be proved wrong especially when it comes to adding efficient video cards to systems to enable Trainz to run better another 20 watts makes a difference on what you can add.

Thanks John

G'day!

Well I've finally got the PC Doctor to come and have a look at my Computer, he's recommened a new graphics card and some more RAM, but I've been told the Celeron processor is a pile of old s*** that can't run Trainz. So I've sent him an email back saying that you guys have said Celeron's cannot run Trainz. He is due to come around on Friday and fix it on the spot. So I won't have it taken away! :D

Cheers! :)

Unless you go with Win 7 64 bit or a 64 bit operating system increasing the memory over 2 gigs doesn't gain you anything. TS2009/10 can use up to 2 gigs under a 32 bit operating system but 4 gigs under a 64 bit operating system. The operating system typically uses half a gig.

Bye John

John: the video adapter (as windows calls it) can be disabled via the control panel. I am also researching the GT 440 video cards for a suitable low profile unit. Right now the PALIT GT440 with 1 GB of DDr3 RAM looks doable. It is very close to the HD 5670 specwise but without the double slot width. Power draw is 65W max which would be approximately 135/140W total. A 300W PS should handle that load easily. The GT 440 is basically a souped up GT 430.

John: I think I have the solution to my FPS problem. If you have a chance check out this review. I am referring to the MSI 430GT OC version still at 49W (I think) since they did not test for power draw. Another plus is having all military grade components. NOTE: The i3 530 used in the comparison is probably comparable to my i5 650. No wonder my FPS drop into the 5-10 range at times. I would be interested in your thoughts.
