Automatic trains?

Hi,

I've tried my hand at earlier versions at Trainz but could never work out how to get the trains to run by themselves. For instance i would like to create a virtual model railway and have the trains start and stop by themselves. Is this possible with 2009?

Thank you,
Michael.

This has been available since Trainz2004 at least - possibly sooner. Place your trainz on the layout where you want them. Assign drivers to each train, then provide the drivers with a detailed step of instructions to perform and place a repeat type command which then cause the driver to repeat all the commands until you choose to stop him/her.

All these commands are saved in the session file when you save the map after placing the trainz and providing the commands.

The AI drivers sometimes will not behave as you expect so you will have to experiment a bit to get the behavior you want.

Have fun,

What about the ability to just put a train on the track, press go and watch the train obey the rules or derail?
I observed they would stop at signals and not go again - i don't want to have to change all the trains rules every time the tracks are changed.

Every given train should have a destination. For lack of specific locations on my layouts I always include portals so that I can have a "default" destination to send a train to. That way I can just ignore the train if I want and it will find the "best path" to the destination. One drawback you have to be made aware of though, is when doing this the path selected may be the best for that train, but may really mess up the path of other trains,

If a train is not given a specific "goal" it will stop at the first junction because it doesn't have a clue what to do.

Have fun

Michael:
Making trains run automatically can be done with a little effort. I've been doing it for about four years using a program developed by the guys at TrainzProRoutes (www.trainzproroutes.org). Presently I create automated scenarios exclusively on TRS 2004 but it can be done with 2006 and 2009 using the new program developed at TrainzProRoutes.

Hi Michael

The program that Gary refers to is called SCS2006 and it runs well in 2009. It is available on the download station and there is a comprehensive manual that you can download with it. It is ideal for what you wish to do but I have to say that there is a steep learning curve with it. Once you master it though it is possible to produce quite complex scenarios as you can program each consist to do exactly what you want and you are not at the mercy of the AI driver. If you are interested in it there are some simple demo routes available at the site mentioned above which will give you a good idea of what the system is capable of. There is also a forum dedicated to SCS2006 on there as well.

Regards

Brian
