Auto Number Question

I love the abiltiy that some assets have to auto number. The problem I see is some of them give a different number each time I enter a session. That's not good if you need to use a specific number for instructions when building sessions. I'm trying to build a session where the user must pay attention to the car numbers according to the manifest and not have to say "the last four green cars."

I have put a number in the running number field under the "?" area. It just seems to ignore it. Is this just the way it is with AN?

Later versions of ARN support saving the car number in the session, although there may be a flag the script writer needs to set. However, if you delete the session, you'd get a different number.

i wasnt aware that later versions can save it, but used to be up to the script writer to save things like ARN to the assets. all of my content wil save its number and ARN does not function if the asset already has a number or one was entered for it.

I was not aware of this as well. Building your models to allow for saving of the numbers is a decision made with great foresight. I am not familiar with all your content, and it seems the OP is concerned more with rolling stock than locomotives (which, you obviously have created more than a few). Are you aware of rolling stock that will save the numbers? I'm only asking because I am ignorant of your catalog.

Check this thread over at TPR for more details of the changes to ARN: http://trainzproroutes.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3159
I *think* all of my cars that use ARN save the numbers to the session - I'll have to check this weekend, as it's been years since I've looked at some of them...

davidakridge, do you have a KUID of something that's giving you problems? We can take a look at it and see what needs to be done to fix it.

well recently I have been making several rolling stock items, all of them save the first arn number they get to the asset so when you open the session they have the number you gave them in surveyor, or the first arn number they got when you placed them. This also applies to sending them in and out of portals to other sessions or users.

Hey Guys

NS37 is correct. The ACF cars that were just put out on Jointed Rails (ATSF, KCS Belle, CSXT) all save the manual number except <kuid2:45324:300006:1>. This is the JRPX ACF Centerflow 4 Bay car. It changes the number evertime I go into the session.

Also the tanker cars on Jointed Rails do the same. <Kuid2:45324:300008:1> is an example

Thanks for the discussion guys. I'm learning so much.

yea that might be true, some of the early cars were using a quick script that was only used until i finished the jr train fx library. since so many reskins were made by others on the team some cars didnt get that applied to them. but hey all of the locomotives have done this for quite a while now, and i never realised there was a way to get ARN to do it for you. its okay though, because my system just disables ARN if it already has a number because it isnt needed.

I'm going to use the CSXT, KCS, ATSF hoppers you just released for my newest session, but was dissappointed that I can't get any of the tankers to work. Those tankers are just awesome.
