"Attention Trainz Fans" (Sept Newsletter)

Trainz Maverick
"Attention Trainz Fans!
We are not giving away to much yet but we have a big announcement to make for all you Trainz fans out there ... Trainz is expanding onto a new additional platform. Can you guess which one? Read the next newsletter for more information!"

X-Box 360? PS3? Wii? While I guess opening up Trainz to the console market might bring in a little extra revenue, I can't really see the mainstream attraction of a freeform sandbox exporting very well. Okay for a quick arcade Densha de Go blast, but those games were custom built to a very high standard by Taito. Guess we will have to wait for more flesh on the bones of the announcement but can't say I'm either optimistic or enthusiastic over the idea. We already have RS.com going down the "gamer" approach with Railworks career mode and the constant DLC assault. A shame if Trainz went the same way. I don't see many routes getting built on a console version...

BTW apologies if this is already posted elsewhere on the board but I couldn't find another thread so started this one.

Of course it will be the Macintosh.

Let us hope they have improved the track resolution and drawing.

The iPad will become the new iPortal as consists disappear off the edge of the GYROSCOPICALLY aware iPad screen.

Just a shame that the iPad isn't a Mac, then, isn't it?

You'll likely get one or the other, not both. My money would be on it being the iOS platform (ie, iPhone/iPad) 'because it's so hip and easy to make money with'.

I take a 'mac' with me when I go train spotting in the UK in summer.

'Mac' as in 'macintosh' that is :o , and a brolly !!

I didn't even think of the Mac :o :o

Well Mrs M. is the proud owner of an IPod and I'm sure she'll be absolutely riveted if she discovers she can play a train sim on it.

Definitely not going to be doing route building on that platform (if it is confirmed) in fact my fingers are too podgy to work the keypad without hitting two at once...

I'm guessing i-phone!

BTW: What's the deal with all this 'texting'? Haven't we worked hard to get away from text based applications? Are women that nostalgic?

A console version? It was requested once or twice in the suggestions and I think Trainz already works with some Macs.

I have a feeling that what ever it is almost all guesses in here will be totally off base. Or maybe someone already hit it dead on?

Personally, I often suggested Linux as a platform for Trainz in the old forum.

Maybe my wishes are becoming a reality?

No one mentioned Linux yet? (Edit: beaten to the punch by 6 minutes, bah!) Lol.

I couldn't see any console meshing very well with Trainz given the things such as the DLS and custom content as it stands already. While the current-gen consoles do have their own hard drives, I think it would be a little too progressive to assume that everyone is going to fill up their Wii's or 360's memory with 150 gigs of Trainz Content if simply to be able to build routes without every single one looking nearly identical due to the possibility of being forced to use only built-ins on consoles due to lack of integration with the DLS.

Worst case scenario: it could be watered down to something roughly the equivalent of a rail-shooter (no pun intended :P ) with a fixed set of routes to drive on, but the Wii's controller scheme may offer some novel gameplay ideas, however.

Actually, it likely IS for the Wii...

N3V announced that last year, I thought that it'd already been released, which is why I discounted it as being 'the new platform', but while I was about to post telling you 'Well, N3V already did that, so it won't be that', I realised that it still hasn't been released, and the release date is 'Q3 2010', so this is almost certainly what it is, either on the iPhone or Wii, whichever is nearer being finished first :)

Unlikely, Loki pretty much proved that there's no real money in linux gaming, and the only linux games that get released are 'ports' of "engine games" (iD's titles, the Unreal series, etc) where a) it's potentially developed on linux/unix/OSX machines to start with, and b) being cross-platform is a sales dept checkmark to show off.

*IF* Auran/N3V had the expertise to get a linux port working, they'd be far far far better off applying that expertise to fixing trainz for everyone, AND ensuring that it works 100% with wine in the process - there'd be a better ROI that way.

To dedicate development resources to a different platform needs something that is a guaranteed cash cow, right now that means iOS or console, with Mac coming up behind those but before anything more esoteric like linux :)

Is it just me or did anyone else hear Steam hissing in the background when they read the bottom of that newsletter? Or is it only because they also announced the release of Classic Cabon City on Steam that I made that connection?

i was told just a few days ago that there will be a windows 8 come out then
after that all computers will be running with a Linux OS from then on and that it was to stop people downloading stuff they shoudn't be,and it was said something about all computers becoming a note pad and if you wish to play a game or download something you had to go through a server who controls you for every move you made on the computer and billing you

I don't know about the linux thing, but many companies are ratcheting up their DRM, with the help of Microsoft. Unfortunately, that often introduces many problems, and is one of the reasons XP will be my last Microsoft OS (aside from the fact I have to support Vista and W7, to some degree, professionally.)

And, yes, there has been a trend towards cloud computing and Software-as-a-Service. Again, not a road I am going to go down. I just want to buy my software, load it, and be done with it. So, if my internet's out, no problem.

My guess would be Mac as they have dabbled in it before (and if I recall actually got Trainz working on a Mac (and not boot camp). So 'updating' it would probably be much less work then re-writing it for a different platform.

If a good hacker wanted to (and assuming it is for the mac) it is possible to get Mac OSX programs working on linux. Or at least it is much easier.

If I'm cynical I'd go for the Xbox, lots to tools are available from Microsoft to help port the code and I've seen comments about if they were starting from scratch console might be the way to go.

Trainz was the only hold out for me when it came to formatting windows off of my laptop's larger hard drive.... but I finally had enough after so many problems with windows Vista. I no longer even have windows installed on my laptop.... So, I really hope they will make a release for linux even though I doubt it will happen.

From a trainz fan to Auran... please help me play trainz without windows! :'(
