At what point does being understanding become being "taken advantage o

I need somebody to "talk me off the ledge" here.

I generally try to be understanding about N3V's various challenges but I'm at the end of my rope. The latest DLS failure pushed me too close to the edge. Largely because while before the DLS being down meant I get a message about checking my user/pass it never caused the game to have a seizure like it is now.

Simply put, nothing works. Content Manager is taking forever to do anything at all and the game just "freezes"

I am being sorely tested NOT to post a full on diatribe about this situation, and the various "executive decisions" that we have all be subjected to, what would appear to be extraordinarily slipshod quality control, and the general "media blackout" about whats going on.

I'm starting to feel semi-serious about checking airfares to OZ - and it AIN'T to go see the wizard....

The game freeze sounds like something else is causing issues, as my version (TS12 SP1 + both hotfixes) is still operating albeit with no download abilities. Does your Jetlog indicate anything out of the ordinary?

Hi Frogpipe, Shane:

Just to confirm that both CM 3.6 (with my 49922 install) and my newer 3.7 (SP1 and both hotfixes) can NOT find the DLS. Obviously it is down right now. However, I could start both versions of T12 and could load routes. Best of luck frogpipe, Shane is your best bet for help. Don't step over that edge just yet. :D

Cheers,

Derek

Indeed. I will do my best to work out what is going on (although I will be going offline in a few minutes to go to bed but will be back on tommorrow morning).

I know that the DLS is down, and do not dispute that. However, that should not cause the game to freeze up, and that indicates something else is causing this (which may be TADDaemon or TrainzUtil related).

Shane:

The game freezes up for me also. I don't get even the loco with churning wheels. Just a blank, "Auran blue" page. Eventually, I am notified that Trainz has stopped responding and it gets killed.

This is NOT the way things are supposed to happen in well-written software. The fact that TadDaemon takes almost five minutes to "give up" making contact with the DLS is ludicrous. If there isn't a response from the DLS servers within, at the most, 30 seconds, then flag the connection down and get on with the game. Don't hold everything up until the user is ready to scream and punch the monitor.

Froggy:

I, also, have just about reached my limit with this game. Just keeping things from flying apart is becoming the do-all, end-all and isn't fun any more.

Can I check the contents of the Jetlog file for both of you? I have noticed some odd goings on involving certain script files in Trainz, and that may be linked.

Regarding the DLS connection issue, a Helpdesk ticket may be needed for that one so N3V can sort it out properly.

When it first happened I got the "hourglass" mouse for some time and then (Not Responding) in the title bar.

I closed the game and caught TADaemon saying "flagged as faulty" for a bunch of stuff right before it's window vanished.

When I restarted CM I tried to use the "faulty= true" filter, but nothing would appear. Then tried all the other tabs, ditto, "Please wait..." and nothing appeared.

I closed it again.

I restarted again.

After a couple tries I could get lists of assets, and a list of "Faulty" ones.

When I right click and choose "Show errors and warnings" it takes maybe 10 mins for 1 route. And of course says 0 errors, 0 warnings - so I highlight ALL the faults and choose "Show error and warnings" after a long time it finally finishes "Validating Assets" and the faulty list is clear.

Now the game appears to be running normally.

Perhaps I just had the bad luck of starting the game at the exact moment the DLS blew it's brains out?

That can happen sometimes, and I've been caught out as well. However, if it's reporting a lot of faulty assets this will cause the game to freeze momentarily.

Shane:

Here's my Jetlog. Not much in it. I haven't a clue what the last entry means.

5 minutes? mines been trying to connect for a couple of hours now I've been watching it. I can get into CM though and run the game OK though, pre SP1 though.

Edit:
**-** think it means stuff it I'm giving up.

Ah - I've seen similar on mine. The bits on the end are related to memory usage etc.

Just out of interest, has your TADDaemon reported a lot of faulty dependencies like frogpipe's system? I've got to go to bed now, so will check the response in the morning when the DLS will hopefully be back up.

~snip~ I'm starting to feel semi-serious about checking airfares to OZ - and it AIN'T to go see the wizard....

Are you planning on fixing it then?

Suggest you take this with you to Brisbane.

:hehe:. All we need now is for someone to ask where it can be downloaded from..........

Right sentiment, wrong direction. You need to head to California (I think) where the servers are. However evasive N3V is about fixing the DLS, it all starts with the cruddy servers that what used to be called The Planet has. Being in Oz, N3V can't reach right out very easily and kick the things so they have to rely on minions and supplicants surrounding the Font From Which All Content Appears. I figure that appeasing the IT gods from afar isn't easy.

I just wish that we would be given a good, thorough explanation of why it is occurring and what N3V intends to do about it. Firing the current bunch of knotheads running the servers comes immediately to mind.

Is that the Jetlog in the bin folder? I've not been able to get the original Jetlog to work in SP1, its always empty or doesn't appear. Tried putting lines in Trainzoptions.txt with no success.. Needed to check it out to figure out a crash I was having.

I, too, am starting to lose patience here. I'm trying to edit my own assets that are local and the "Open for Edit" tab says "Please Wait..." and has for quite a while!

Maybe, just maybe, it is just reality has settled in, and now you are becoming immune to previous thoughts and feeling?

What has probably happened is that a copy of TrainzUtil.exe has hung up trying to validate a piece of content. Open the Task Manager and kill TrainzUtil.exe (NOT TADDaemon!!!!). The filters will start working again.

So you can easily find another malfunctioning copy of TrainzUtil, open the Options for CM and check the box that deals with 'view processes'.
