Are SSD's an Improvement?

My Trainz folder is currently more than 100 gigs and since you need to rebuild the database sometimes you need more available space for that as well so I suggest 60 gigs might well be on the small side.

Cheerio John
Well its too late now! I have a budget issue so I ordered the inexpensive 60 gig one. I only intend to put Trainz on it, and maybe Blender and my paint program to make navigating folders easier.

My Trainz folder is only about 10 gigs, and I could easily prune it down to a quarter of that, I only ever do ECML and my own routes. I've never done a datbase rebuild, hopefully I won't have to!

Keep your fingers crossed for me.........

SSD Questions

Can I just copy my entire TS2010 folder onto the SSD drive and leave the old one intact? I really want a good safety net as the SSD's (especially the cheapo one I bought) seem to be a bit dodgy. Or will I get confusions with two CMP's?

And, as this SSD is a SATA 2, do I really need a SATA 3 cable?????

Thanks,
Mick.

You CAN copy Trainz over but I found that it had a few glitches in it so I eventually decided on a full reinstall. Having old copies doesn't cause any problems as long as (obviously) you delete the old desktop shortcut and create a new shortcut to the new version.
Which SSD is a SATA 2?

You most certainly can do this. The only problems you'll experience will be relating to installing further Trainz products (they'll default to your original install location, not your copy) or installing CDP files (they may default to installing in your original location initially.)

One problem I found when downloading some rolling stock (notably Kemplen's Class 124 Transpennine unit) was that they appeared all black. When I deleted the copy and installed a fresh one that problem cleared up.

On the subject of SSD's if you have a SATA 2 SSD there'll be no point in putting in SATA 3 cables even if your PC has SATA 3 ports.
I found this price comparison site http://www.idealo.co.uk/cat/14613F1088950/ssd.html and even though SATA 2 drives are lower in price it isn't as big a difference as I thought.
