Anybody thought about the Rio Grande Tennessee Pass

I thought that it would be cool to make a realistic Tennessee Pass set in the late 80's and early 90's (It's final days in service). Anybody have any tips on how I can get the terrain? I thought about doing the section from Minturn to Leadville.

Very COOL RR Line !

Either make hundereds of Topo Map images, and interconnect "Basemap A" images...or ask someone who knows how, to make a DEM for you.

Cool Project !

Locomotives

The Locomotives I plan to include are:
GP30s
GP35s
GP40s (Lots of em!)
GP40-2s
SD45s
SD40T-2s
GP60s
and SD50s

If it succeds...

I may include different eras if it succeds like the 1950s steam and diesel mix (love that era)or maybe a historic narrow gauge version from the 20s

Air Horns

Should I include P3s, S3s, or something else? I saw some videos of some old action on the line and they sounded like they all were S3s, though many were fouled and turned out to sound like bycycle horns.:hehe:

A realistic Tennessee Pass would be a very nice thing.
I tried to make a layout of this, including the Leadville minning area to Climax with its narrow gauge railroads (D&RG and DSP&P) and also the Colorado Midland’s Hagermann Pass to Thomasville, all at 1/2 scale. However it remained in the phase of a project.
A major impediment in the Leadville area is the fact that the Arkansas River valley is here very wide, although I have used a 50 percent scale. Because of this, you will probably want to select another terminus point – there is a long siding just south of Tennesse Pass, or maybe Leadville Junction – than Leadville.
A very detalied map of the area can be found at
http://libremap.org/data/state/colorado/drg/
First, install the alternatiff plug-in from
http://www.alternatiff.com/
to see the maps in your browser, then search for the ‚Leadville North’ and ‚Pando’ topographical maps.
For the terrain you can take a look at the Wewain’s tutorial from
http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wewain/trainz/homepage.htm
and for Tiger files at
http://arcdata.esri.com/data/tiger2000/tiger_download.cfm
With the Geomerge freeware you can combine multiple tiger files of the same kind (roads, railways, rivers and so on).
Or, more easily, you can use the Transdem payware from
http://www.rolandziegler.de/StreckeUndLandschaft/transdemEngl.htm
Good luck,
Radu

Locomotives

I might want to start out with a good ol' GP35. I always liked those ancient Diesels! Any one know where I can find a good repaint template?

great maybe I can run 2-6-0 steam engines on freight trains on this route in trainz! were the tracks ever taken up after trains stopped running through there or did another railroad took it over?

Dilapidated, but runnable

The Track is dilapidaded, and even sometimes moved! But Union Pacific still runs a hyrail truck, but VERY occasionaly. Otherwise, it's just a dead heap of track... sadly

By the way, do you know who can make a DEM for me, because I cant even get the thing to install on my computer!

Sadly, No not at the moment but I wished I did! Maybe somone else who is familiar with this can help you out!

Fishplates

From all the photos and videos of the area that I saw, the track had fishplates! The most realistic track I think I can use so far is the 132lb MBTA track. I'm using fishlipsatwork's Yellowstone S to practice on. Areas on that DEM do somewhat resemble Tennessee Pass, I guess...

SD50

If I ever do get to making the scenarios, many will probably require JointedRail's D&RGW SD50. I'm planning to buy it soon. The most important thing about that particular Locomotive is that it has ARN running numbers!

Trees

Are the trees along Tennessee Pass Balsims, Western Larches, Black Spruces, and Blue Spruces?
Am I correct? Please tell me if I am missing any or have any wrong.
After all, we don't want to have unrealistic Foliage.:)

132lb MTBA track, in my opinion the best high poly, highly detailed track that I have ever seen..but it slays framerates.:mop: :'( :mop:

I have been testing "Slavedrivers-WRRW Dark Balast Track" and it looks fabulous and has acceptable framerates:

The Frog L/R and Joiner High work fantastic with his tracks.

I still am fond of good old MP Wood and MP Rusty.

VMD-US Mainline Old/Dark tracks look good but have european looking tie down bolts (which can be cut and pasted out in the file TGA).
