Airlines still cheaper than HSR

A friend of mine is looking to go from London to Brussels next fall so I was looking into the prices for him, just pulled up the costs again. I adjusted the search a bit, what I looked into was a weekend trip from London to Brussels & back in mid July.
Eurostar: $263.80 - $715.00 (first class is the later)
Kayak Airline: $334 - $1253
Prices in USD

But I think a lot of depends on when your looking, the services being offered & connections. These reports come out every once and a while, and can be true in some situations, and in others not. The issue I tend to have with them is that they or the readers usually take the article to mean that Airlines is always cheaper then HSR (or rail).

Yes, each case must be weighed carefully before deciding to throw money at wings or rails...

That seems very dear for the journey. I found it for 209 bucks (437 first class) just doing a fairly average search. That said, there are flights available from 178 bucks return.
