AI Drivers, Signals, Interactions

I can't find any discussion on these session-writing issues. Am I the only one having problems?

I'm using just 3 trains in a small layout that came with TRS 2006 - Industrial Wasteland. A single AI train runs fine. Two or more can interfere with each other, and I don't mean in conjunction with signals. A train when used by itself will follow a certain path between two industries. Put two trains in the layout and let one of them be somewhere on the main many signal blocks away, and the other may not enter the main until the first is off - even when the first will take a turnout far away and never affect a signal near the waiting train. On the other hand, one of them may enter the main in opposition to the first when no more than two signal blocks away. The one already in the main may forget to take the turnout that it usually does, after which it would be fully off the main, probably before the 2nd train would even get to the other side of the turnout, and then will run right up into a face-off. The immediate signal state means nothing to it.

The intelligence part of AI doesn't seem to be there. Anybody have any advice?
