Ads on the Forums??

I have Add Block in Firefox, just don't know quite how to use it or what to block.

Click on the offending item > right click > adblock plus frame, I think for those ads.

There have never been ads on my screen when viewing the Forum before today.

They are still appearing.

The first lot related to things I was looking at before opening the forum after switching on this morning, so it doesn’t appear to link with browsing threads here, at least not initially.

I’m currently using Google browser, which may have something to do with it. What is odd is that the boxes appear in what seems to be a carefully chosen space, top and bottom. They don’t appear in a random fashion, blocking something you’re looking at, as rogue pop-ups traditionally do if you’re not protected.

Looks as if it could be Auran “approved”. It would be nice to know.

If so, I guess I might feel like supporting it. If not, it feels like a hack and I’d like to get rid of them.

The ads seem to reflect what has recently been browsed by the user.

Mine refers to car insurance and wheel clamping.

I turned off AdBlockPlus and refreshed this page. Sure enough, ads were right on the top right. I've undoubtedly seen them before which is why I AdBlocked them. One of them was for MSTS. Very weird.

In addition to the ad-specific instructions clam mentioned, consider a list "subscription" to easylist or similar. They're free. Just click on Tools->AdBlock Plus Preferences->Filters->Add Filter Subscription.

IE? Probably not....but I only use it if I absolutely have to....

I use Firefox with the No-Script plug-in, which I highly recommend. Disallowing googlesyndication.com gets rid of the ads.

No, I don't think so. The HOSTS file trick would work because it's system wide and it'll stop any form of communication with advertising, malware, etc. site except those directly referenced by IP address, which almost none are, and so it's good for people that must use IE or another browser without a good ad-blocker. But if you use FF, AdBlockPlus is generally enough, and very good with the right subscription.

Thanks for the link.

After opening it I found that you need to go into 'Most poplar' from the list on the left which then offers AdBlock.

If it helps Auran I'll probably leave it be, unless it becomes a problem.
