Activate AWS in a scenario i created (Trainz 12)

I'm looking for a way to activate the AWS in a scenario i created from Newcastle to York on the default ECML route (which of course has all the necessary AWS equipment installed on the route already).

When i drive the in built scenarios the AWS works but when i create my own i can't seem to find how to get it to.

Is it just a case of a button to press or do i have to do some clever setting up on the actual route? I'm fairly sure the route itself has the track equipment for it but when i change points and such in Driver mode the signals don't even update to reflect whether a set of points are safe to cross etc.

You will need to add the AWS Interface rule to the session.

Cool - found it. What is the difference between active and passive AWS? I googled this but could not find a definate answer.
