Abandoned Lines

Hello all,

Does anyone know of any abandoned railway lines or areas where you can get abandoned telephone insulators near the Mid North Coast (I'm in the Hastings).

I really want to go out and search for some insulators...

I've no idea what one is but wouldn't the telephone depot have some lyiing around. The nearest wins.

Few years back I was railfanning along a CSX line where they were redoing the track. I remember the line crew were tearing out the old telephone poles along that section. Didn't take much to ask them to take the old insulators down for me, ended up with some fifteen of them, of which four were the super rare cobalt blue ones.

A storm chasing friend of mine collects the insulators. While we were in New Mexico last spring, he walked along the old Santa Fe looking for some insulators.

He said that some can be quite rare and quite expensive when buying them in the clubs.

I have a couple of old ones from the Boston & Maine Railroad. When the MBTA was redoing the line, they took out the old poles and the insulators were lying around. There were a lot of broken ones unfortunately, but I found two that were in excellent shape. They are probably over 100 years old.

Thanks for the replys but when I said the Mid North Coast, I meant in Australia (NSW). Not sure if there is a mid north coast in the USA.

The problem I find with getting insulators off ebay is the cost of shipping. My father bought me a box of insulators for about $10 AU, and the shipping cost $60 AU.

Its rather hard for me to get insulators in Australia. I live miles from a railway line, and the closest thing to a disused telegraph pole within a radius of 10Km around my house, is a pole across the road, with a hook on the top...

I just wish that they still ran Conrail around here, but this morning, I heard a K5LA too loud to be a passenger train AND I once saw some points to the quarry. There are MANY telephone poles in Bernardsville near the RR tracks, but the RR is still active.
