A Tour of Norfolk Southern's Juniata Locomotive Shops

This video is pretty cool, as it provides us a tour of Norfolk Southern's Juniata Locomotive Shops, which we would otherwise never see. Part two will appear soon. Now if only I could tour Juniata Shops . . .

Time for Part Two

This one features tours of an SD60E, GP59E, RP-M4C road slug, SD40-2, and some of Norfolk Southern's Office Cars.

That's pretty cool.

The NMRA has offered tours like this too for the members. Back in 1985, I attended the 50th Anniversary show, which was in Boston. We got multiple tours of various prototype operations including a tour of the Conrail's Selkirk Yard and engine repair shops.

While I was there, I noticed some circuit boards and some video terminals which were still common during that time. I remarked to our tour guide that I fixed the same model video terminals they had in the shop. The guy spoke with me afterwards and offered me a job on the spot as a tech. Like an idiot, I turned it down.

Wow, what a great Railroad to put something like that on, especially at a facility as busy as the Juniata shops. Thanks for posting :)

In yesteryear most of the surrounding towns were employed on the PRR, @ 35,000 employees daily

There were dozens of towers in Altoona, most within visible range from one another

There were 5 man crews on all freights, and allot of switchs were hand thrown, and many shifts of multiple railcar brakemen riders rode the brake wheel of rolling humped/kicked railcars down into the several classification bowls

There were many dozens of railcar inspectors, and many thousands of shop employees

Today there are only a couple railcar inspectors, and a hundred, or so, actual floor employees in the Juniata Shops ... not so very busy a place, as it was in yesteryear
